Will Marshon Lattimore play against the Cowboys? Latest injury update on the Commanders cornerback

Marshon Lattimore hasn't played since he re-injured his hamstring against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 16 and he won't play again during the regular season.

That's because Commanders head coach Dan Quinn ruled the Pro Bowl cornerback out on Friday ahead of the team's matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.

It's simply a matter of Lattimore not being ready to go and the last thing the Commanders will do is push him to play.

"It didn't, honestly... because I think of it as the same through the year, you know," Quinn said when asked if next week's game factored into any of the injury management. "Can they make it? Can they do the things that they need to do? So it didn't creep in to the decisions... and just on the soft tissue ones, man, you just, you don't want to do it 'til you know. That's really important, but that would have been the same in any of the weeks."

Now, the attention turns to the playoffs. Lattimore missed nearly six weeks of game  action because of a hamstring when he first joined the Commanders. That, on top of just how finicky soft-tissue injuries are to begin with, also leave his stauts for the Wild Card round in question. Quinn did say on Friday, though, that Lattimore is "very close".

"I can't speak on the long term but I do know he's working incredibly hard at it," said Quinn. "... So when you're close, you want to obviously go for it. And the fact that he is putting in all the work to go there, I'm hopeful that it'll eventually be, we're okay. We won't say we can put it in the rearview mirror forever, because there'll always be probably some maintenance when he, or any player, has an injury and [they] keep working through it. But I would say that I love the speed that he's working with and he's certainly very close."

Either way, sitting Lattimore for this game, no matter how close he is to returning or how far he'd come along, is the right call. There's no point in potentially re-aggravating the injury in a not-so-important game. No matter how important Quinn thinks having the sixth seed is.

Quinn rules out two other players and gives an update on Austin Ekeler

Rookie safety Tyler Owens and rookie linebacker Jordan Magee were also ruled out of Sunday's game.

On the other hand, things sound rather optimistic for Austin Ekeler's status. The veteran running back saw his 21-day practice window open up earlier in the week and has been a full participant in practice all week long.

"He had a great week," said Quinn. "We'll visit about that tonight [in terms of] where we're going, but he really had a fantastic week of preparation. He looked fast, explosive, all the stuff that Austin brings. We'll visit with him and and [general manager] Adam [Peters] tonight and tomorrow...

"... I love the speed that he played with. I love the energy that he brought into it. So that's what my eyes and ears were looking at for him."

Ekeler's return would provide a nice boost to both the Commanders offense and kick return game. If he doesn't play this week, then it sounds like he should be good to go for whomever the Commanders play in the Wild Card round.
