Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders will not be in uniform on Saturday when the team faces the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field.

Sanders impressed in his NFL debut last week against the Carolina Panthers with 138 passing yards and two touchdowns. However, he suffered an oblique strain during practice on Wednesday and remains sidelined, according to multiple reports.

The Browns have labeled him day-to-day, and the expectation is that he could return in time for next week’s preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams. For now, he’ll continue to focus on treatment and recovery.

While Sanders is unavailable, fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel is set to make his preseason debut, provided he clears a final evaluation on his hamstring tightness. The former Oregon Ducks standout missed last week’s opener, but is slated to start if healthy.

NFL journeyman passer Tyler Huntley also scheduled to see extended action. If Gabriel isn’t cleared, Huntley would be the lone active quarterback available for Cleveland.

Sanders’ absence means fans won’t get a second look at the promising young quarterback just yet, but his strong performance in Week 1 keeps him firmly in the mix.

Gabriel remains his primary competition for a roster spot, though the most likely outcome is both rookies sticking around in Cleveland. With two preseason games left, the quarterback depth chart is still unsettled, and every rep will matter in determining who backs up Joe Flacco.

For Sanders, the priority is returning healthy, with the Rams game offering another chance to showcase his growth before final roster decisions are made on Aug. 28.
