The Philadelphia Eagles are making moves in their running back room, and Will Shipley is in position to take on a bigger role in 2025. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Steelers have addressed their own backfield needs by signing Kenneth Gainwell to a one-year deal.
Will Shipley, a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, showed flashes of potential in his rookie season. The former Clemson standout contributed primarily on special teams and as a backup, logging 30 rushing attempts for 82 yards and 4 receptions for 35 yards. His versatility was on display in the NFC Championship Game, where he scored his first NFL touchdown on a key 80-yard drive. He also played a role in the Eagles' Super Bowl victory over the Chiefs, returning a kickoff for 25 yards.
With Philadelphia looking to solidify its running back rotation, Shipley is expected to compete for the No. 2 spot. His ability to contribute as a runner, receiver, and returner makes him a strong candidate to earn more touches next season.
The Steelers, meanwhile, have secured a veteran presence in Kenneth Gainwell. The former Eagles running back is heading to Pittsburgh after serving as a backup to Saquon Barkley last season. Gainwell recorded 75 carries for 290 yards and a touchdown, adding 16 receptions for 116 yards. His move to the Steelers comes as the team reshapes its backfield following the departure of Najee Harris to the Chargers.
At 26, Gainwell brings experience and reliability behind projected starter Jaylen Warren. Pittsburgh’s depth chart also includes, Jonathan Ward, Aaron Shampklin, and Evan Hull, but Gainwell figures to be a key part of their rotation.
Both the Eagles and Steelers are making strategic adjustments to their rushing attacks. Shipley’s growth in Philadelphia could give the Eagles another dynamic option, while Gainwell’s addition in Pittsburgh helps the Steelers maintain a balanced ground game heading into 2025.
