The Wisconsin Badgers extended a scholarship to a top 2028 class linebacker in May and have kept eyes on the recruit since doing so.
Brayden Bonik, the 123rd overall recruit in the 2028 class, is considered to be one of the top rising talents within the class. Bonik was only added into the databases days ago, but has appeared as a four-star athlete according to 247Sports due to his ability to play running back. Some early programs who have extended offers include Penn State, Georgia, TCU, Nebraska, and Florida State.
Bonik was originally offered a scholarship by former linebacker Tuf Borland, who has been an excellent evaluator of talent at the position since joining the program. Bonik is both a physically and mentally talented player on the football field and should be someone who continues to grow into the position over time.
When asked about what the recruiting process has been like for the linebacker, Bonik responded, “It has made me even more hungry as a player and to come out this season and play to my expectations. At this point in my recruiting all schools have stood out to me with me being so young I’m open to all my options.”
As Bonik stated, the process is still wide open for the linebacker and no decisions are really on the horizon. For both the Wisconsin Badgers and other programs, building a relationship early will be key to sticking by the side of the recruit through another likely scholarship surge. Bonik currently holds 25 offers and picked up 13 of those offers since the start of May alone.
When asked about what the Wisconsin scholarship in particular means to the recruit, Bonik stated, “I was very excited because have a a lot of respect for the conference and Wisconsin is known for having a physical and tough style of play that I like.”
The linebacker can see himself within the Wisconsin defense, but still needs plenty of more time before coming to any decisions regarding the program.
On the field, the play of Bonik has largely been why the recruit has received as much early attention as he has. Bonik has great size for the position at 6-foot-1-inch, 190-pounds, but truly stands out on the field due to his mind.
The linebacker has incredible vision and can analyze the field and repeat back what is going to happen in a moments notice. Bonik always puts himself in a position to make a play and has the range on the field to get to wherever he may need to in order to make a stop.
Additionally, Bonik is also a high energy player who rarely allows himself to take any time off when he is on the field. Bonik broke down what separates himself from other recruits and stated, “My motor on the field, always playing at 100% no matter the situation, my speed and quickness to the ball, and my toughness willing to compete with whoever is on the other side of the football regardless of who they are.”
For the Wisconsin Badgers, recruiting Bonik means playing the long game and that just might be the way to earn the trust of the recruit.
