WR Ja’Lynn Polk Surprises With Early Retirement

The role to which Underhill is referring is not an insignificant one. He reports that Polk had been getting a significant snap share, and NFL insider Josina Anderson divulged from a source that Polk was “projected to be WR4 at best.” With Chris Olave signed long-term, first-round rookie Jordyn Tyson joining the receiving corps, and Devaughn Vele getting a full offseason in New Orleans, Polk seemed best positioned to receive snaps ahead of the rest of a young, inexperienced group.

Polk was a second-round pick out of Washington selected by the Patriots two years ago. Starting seven of 15 game appearances during quarterback Drake Maye‘s rookie campaign, Polk made a minimal impact as two tight ends and two running backs each produced more receptions and receiving yards than he did. In that year, Polk caught only 12 of 33 targets for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Mere weeks before his sophomore campaign could begin, it ended as Polk was required to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery.

Polk had already been facing an uphill battle to remain on the Patriots’ roster, despite his recent draft status, and the injury appeared to seal his fate to a path outside of New England. Shortly into the new season, the team traded Polk and a 2028 seventh-round pick to the Saints in exchange for a sixth-rounder in 2027. Polk spent his recovery with his contract controlled by New Orleans, as his new team took a chance on him rebounding to live up to his second-round billing.

According to Mike Triplett, also with NewOrleans.Football, Polk had been participating throughout the entire offseason up until an absence on Friday. It’s unclear if that absence was due to an injury or a personal issue or if it had any relevance to today’s announcement. Regardless, it’s a shocking end for the 24-year-old’s time in the NFL as he pursues his best path forward.

At the time, per Anderson, there are no intentions for the team to add a depth replacement to the group of pass catchers. Underhill reported last week that Tyson had experienced “a recurrence at some point with the injury” he had been dealing with before the draft. General manager Mickey Loomis disclosed that the team is evaluating the situation “day-by-day” with a possibility that Tyson could need to ramp up throughout training camp, but the fact that New Orleans won’t be seeking a replacement for Polk may indicate that Tyson’s outlook is not so bad.
