Xavier McKinney Ponders Giants Future
Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - While receiver Sterling Shepard was off in one corner of the New York Giants postgame locker room enjoying what is likely the end of his eight-year career with the only NFL team he's ever known and played for, safety Xavier McKinney was off in another corner pondering his NFL future.

McKinney, who posted a tweet about feeling disrespected earlier in the year, was clearly not happy that he was excluded from a group of teammates such as left tackle Andrew Thomas and defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence, who received contract extensions before their existing rookie deals expired.

General manager Joe Schoen told reporters before training camp that he had a conversation with McKinney, who just finished his fourth NFL season, confirming that he would wait before discussing an extension with the former Alabama product, perhaps looking to see if McKinney, who dealt with injuries that cost him chunks of two of his first three NFL seasons, could stay healthy.

Not only did McKinney stay healthy, but he was also one of two Giants defenders (inside linebacker Bobby Okereke being the other) who took every snap this season with the Giants.

McKinney, who had two interceptions in the Giants' 27-10 over the Philadelphia Eagles in the regular-season finale, has already topped some of his previous career high marks, such as tackles (he's over 100 on the season, second behind Okereke.

But McKinney, who smiled when a teammate shouted "Pay the man!" during his media session, feels that it wasn't good enough for as good of a season as he had this year.

"I didn't really think it was my best year," he said. "To be honest, I don't think I've touched – scratched the surface of who I am as a player. I think I could've been a lot better this year in a lot of different areas, but I think the best is yet to come for me."

Will that be as a Giant? McKinney scoffed when asked if he would be open to receiving the franchise tag. And when asked if he thought he might be back, he said, "I can't really – I can tell you, but I can't really control nothing. It's a business at the end of the day, so I just got to be where my feet are, be present, and that's really about it."
