The Kansas City Chiefs were hoping the story would be different at wide receiver in 2025 after two rather frustrating seasons at the position. The latest news from Chiefs training camp is putting that concern back on the table.
Second-year wide receiver Xavier Worthy was placed in the NFL's concussion protocol after he "banged his head" during Tuesday's practice in St. Joseph. Andy Reid updated reporters on the team's latest injury updates after practice on Wednesday.
The Chiefs can afford to play things very cautiously with Worthy knowing that they're so far from the start of the regular season. Early training camp is always rife with injuries—typically of the hamstring variety—but a head injury is always a serious issue to watch that can have lingering effects for quite some time.
Worthy is expected to play a major role in the Chiefs' offense after proving that he could indeed be a reliable deep threat at the pro level after starring for the University of Texas. The Chiefs drafted Worthy in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft but concerns about Worthy's build made it a bit of a risk for K.C.
General manager Brett Veach knew the team needed to stretch the offense after watching the unit sputter without Tyreek Hill to take the lid off of defenses. Patrick Mahomes was forced to adjust his approach considerably without Hill, and injuries to primary pass catchers only exacerbated the issue.
Worthy had 59 catches for 638 yards and 6 touchdowns for the Chiefs last year, but he added another 19 catches and a league-leading 287 receiving yards in the postseason with 3 more touchdowns. Those totals illustrate just how much he was growing week to week, which makes him a popular breakout choice for 2025.
Health at the wideout position has been a concern for the last couple of seasons, especially in 2024 when Hollywood Brown sat out the entire season but two games and Rashee Rice went down in Week 4 for the rest of the year.
The Chiefs are already dealing with a few minor injuries at wide receiver early in training camp. Skyy Moore has a hamstring issue. Brown is out with an ankle concern. Now Worthy is in the concussion protocol. Here's hoping that Worthy gets a clean bill of health from the Chiefs sooner than later.
