The Miami Dolphins wrapped up their 2026 offseason program with plenty of questions surrounding a roster that has undergone significant change. While training camp will ultimately determine roles and depth chart battles, the spring provided an early look at some of the team’s most important young players. Among those drawing the most attention were quarterback Malik Willis and a rookie defensive class that showed encouraging signs throughout OTAs and minicamp.

For Willis, the offseason was less about making highlight plays and more about establishing himself as the leader of the offense. By all accounts, he appeared more comfortable and confident as practices progressed, showing a stronger grasp of the system and a greater command of the huddle. Coaches consistently emphasized his growth as a communicator and decision-maker, two areas that will be critical as Miami moves forward.

Perhaps the most encouraging development was Willis’ poise. Rather than relying solely on his athletic ability, he looked increasingly willing to work through his progressions and make the right reads. His arm talent and mobility have never been in question, but the Dolphins needed to see growth from him as a passer. Throughout the spring, there were signs that those improvements are beginning to take shape.

Cornerback Chris Johnson was one of the most talked-about young players during offseason workouts. The rookie displayed the versatility Miami covets in its secondary, lining up both on the boundary and in the slot while holding his own against veteran receivers. His competitiveness and ball skills were evident throughout the spring, and he appears to have positioned himself for a meaningful role entering training camp.

Linebacker Jacob Rodriguez also stood out with his instincts and physical style of play. Whether working in coverage or attacking downhill against the run, Rodriguez consistently found ways to be around the football. He has been showcasing the playmaking ability that helped make him one of Miami’s top draft selections.

The rookie defenders have embraced the competitive environment established by the coaching staff. The energy and urgency they brought to practice were noticeable, and several young players looked eager to challenge for snaps despite being only a few months removed from college football.

Offseason success does not guarantee regular-season production. The true evaluations will begin once the pads come on in training camp. Willis appears to be making steady progress as the offense’s leader, while Miami’s young defenders have already shown flashes of the talent and potential the organization envisioned when it invested in them this spring.
