Young players who stood out in Broncos' Week 1 preseason win

In the Broncos' 17-7 preseason win over Dallas on Saturday, several young players flashed talent.

In the offseason, the Broncos moved Baron Browning from inside to outside linebacker. It appears this might be his natural spot. The second-year linebacker made his presence felt in the backfield, recording a sack, a tackle for a loss, a pass deflection and four tackles. When the Broncos traded Von Miller to the Rams, they created a need for a persistent pass rush. If Browning continues to progress, he can fill the void.

Young players can make a name for themselves with clutch plays. Safety P.J. Locke picked off quarterback Cooper Rush on a fourth-and-2 in the first quarter. The Broncos are loaded at safety with Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson. Locke gives the team flexibility because he can also play in the nickel defense as a defensive back. If he continues to play well, other opportunities may sprout.

Developing wideout Kendall Hinton’s career has taken a series of unexpected turns. The one-time emergency quarterback is trying to prove there is substance to his game. Hinton had four catches for 53 yards, including an acrobatic 24-yard touchdown grab.

Speaking of wide receivers, the unit shined as one of the deepest on the team. Rookies Jalen Virgil and Brandon Johnson could be potential deep-ball threats. Both hauled in a pass of at least 40 yards. Virgil led the team in receiving yardage with 83; Johnson was right behind him with 64.

Another striking player was second-year prospect, Seth Williams. He made a variety of catches at odd angles and a leaping catch for a touchdown with a defender draped over him. The Broncos hope to see more production from their wide receivers because Tim Patrick is out for the season with a torn ACL. Russell Wilson, who did not play Saturday, needs multiple targets.

The Broncos have sought an exciting punt-kick returner since Trindon Holiday departed. Rookie Montrell Washington could be his successor. He had 45 yards on two punt returns, taking the pressure off the offense. Washington also can play wide receiver. This versatility could turn him into a useful playmaker.
