Zac Taylor Reveals If Bengals Will Add Another QB After Joe Burrow Injury

The Cincinnati Bengals, who improved to 2-0 on Sunday with a thrilling win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, received tough news after star quarterback Joe Burrow left the game in the second quarter with turf toe.

The injury was later diagnosed as a Grade 3 and requires surgery, sidelining Burrow for a minimum of three months. This puts second-string quarterback Jake Browning, who led the comeback on Sunday, in line to start for the foreseeable future—a role he has handled before.

Browning, who joined the Bengals in 2021, is well-versed in the offense. In roughly a half of action on Sunday, he threw three interceptions but also passed for 241 yards, two touchdowns, and rushed for the go-ahead touchdown with 18 seconds left to seal the victory.

On Monday, following the confirmation of Burrow’s injury, head coach Zac Taylor spoke about his confidence in Browning moving forward and if the plan is to add another quarterback over the coming days.

"I feel very confident in Jake," Taylor said. "I think Jake has proven his caliber in this league, and he can help us win football games and contend for everything we want to contend for. That being said, we're always open to bringing in other people at this point. We’ve got two quarterbacks sitting in this room, but I’m sure we’ll turn over a lot of rocks trying to find another guy."

Currently, the only quarterbacks on Cincinnati’s roster are Jake Browning and Brett Rypien. A move to add another signal-caller seems inevitable, but the extent of that move remains unclear.

The Bengals could simply bring in a quarterback for depth, or they could pursue a player capable of eventually competing for the starting role if Browning’s performance doesn’t translate into wins.

Some plausible options include Desmond Ridder, who spent most of training camp and preseason with the Bengals before being released in August; Jameis Winston; Trey Lance; Sam Howell; Joe Milton; and even Kirk Cousins, though Cincinnati would likely struggle to afford him after his four-year, $180 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons last year.

For now, it will be Jake Browning under center this week against the Minnesota Vikings, who will also be without their starting quarterback, as J.J. McCarthy has already been ruled out with an ankle injury.
