Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor declared that starting right guard Lucas Patrick will be out "a couple weeks" after suffering a calf injury during the team's Week 1 victory over the Cleveland Browns.

"We'll make some decisions there," Taylor told reporters Monday afternoon. "But other than that, everyone came out pretty clean."

Taylor would not state which player will be taking over during Patrick's absence, but the decision should be fairly obvious.

It's Dalton Risner's time to shine at RG

When Patrick went down in the second quarter of Sunday's game, Dalton Risner came in off the bench and looked like he had been with the team for longer than just a week and some change. He played 36 unexpected snaps just nine days after officially signed with the team on August 28. He had just one padded practice in stripes during those nine days.

Center Ted Karras called his performance "the most stunning example of football professionalism" he's ever seen, according to Dan Hoard.

That got a co-sign from Taylor.

"That was his second time in full pads," Taylor said. "Thursday's practice, Sunday's game. That's difficult, you know? The above-the-neck stuff, he's got. The experience, he's got. He obviously did a great job staying in shape where he was ready to go, and I thought did a great job getting through the game."

For Risner to be thrown into the fire against one of the best defensive fronts the Bengals will face all season was a tall task for him to come out standing. It's more than enough evidence for him to take the reins at the position while Patrick misses the next couple games based on Taylor's estimate.

Risner's competition for the job could've played instead of him. Cody Ford and rookie Jalen Rivers were both active Sunday and able to enter the game at a position they've repped in practice, but it was Risner who got the call. That alone signals who will be preparing to start this coming Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Taylor speaks to the media next on Wednesday, which is when the team returns to practice. An announcement should be made that day, and barring an unexpected development, Risner will be back with the starters.
