Zach Wilson to Seek Trade From New York Jets

Zach Wilson and his agent have received permission to seek a possible trade. In 2022, he faced multiple benchings, indicating the subpar play on the field. The Jets selected the BYU product as the No. 2 overall pick back in 2021, demonstrating their faith in his abilities.

In 34 career starts, Wilson has thrown for 6,293 yards with 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions. Zach Rosenblatt confirmed that “Joe Douglas gave Zach Wilson permission to talk to other teams about a trade. #Jets.”

Zach Wilson Allowed to Explore Other Options

General Manager Joe Douglas said at the NFL Combine,” Where we are exactly, we’ve given them permission to talk to other teams about a trade.” Although Zach Wilson has shown flashes, subpar quarterback play has marred most of his career. The 24-year-old BYU product has a 12-21 career record as a starter with a 57.0 completion percentage.

After Wilson’s disastrous first two years with the Jets, New York made a blockbuster deal to acquire Aaron Rodgers last offseason. Unfortunately, Rodgers tore his Achilles in his first regular season game with New York. Despite being the No. 2 overall pick, Zach Wilson struggled under center after being thrust back in as a starter.

Zach Wilson threw only eight touchdown passes and seven interceptions, winning four of 11 starts. After two starts, the team released Tim Boyle, who had replaced him. Presuming that Wilson finds a team, the Jets will still have to agree to terms of a trade.

Where Could Wilson Possibly End Up?

The 24-year-old quarterback, drafted second overall three years ago, is not expected to have a significant market demand. Since entering the NFL, Zach Wilson has struggled with accuracy, unproductive play,  and injury. With Aaron Rodgers being the planned successor, where could Wilson possibly end up?

Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders are in dire need of a quarterback who can lead the team to victory. While Zach Wilson may not be that guy, he could bring some competition to Aidan O’Connell under center. Things could pan out if the Raiders don’t seek a quarterback for the 2024 NFL Draft and make a splash trade to pick up someone like  Justin Fields.

Philadelphia Eagles

Although the Eagles would surely love a more productive backup to Jalen Hurts, Zach Wilson shows some mobility, as Hurts does. The Eagles have been active in developing quarterback play. Jets general manager Joe Douglas is an old friend who worked with Howie Roseman in Philly. However, Tanner McKee could still become a reliable No. 2 option for Philadelphia.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts are a team with an interesting quarterback situation coming into 2024. Anthony Richardson showed some potential but only played four games and left three of them due to injury. Let’s get one thing straight: wherever Wilson goes, he will likely be the backup.

Richardson’s rookie year ended on Oct. 25 due to surgery for an AC Joint sprain. Gardener Minshew II wound starting 13 games for Indianapolis. He was productive with 3,305 yards, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Zach Wilson could benefit from Steichen’s system since it favors Quarterbacks with legs.

It remains to be seen if Wilson will have a starter role at his next stop. Chances are, it won’t be, considering his struggles on the field.
