When you know, you know, but it doesn't mean that a retirement announcement isn't still shocking to deal with.
Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher Za'Darius Smith just threw the whole Eagles world on its head as he took to Instagram to announce his retirement from the NFL. Smith played in just five games with the Eagles.
"I knew this day would come - but now that it's here, I'm feeling so many emotions I never expected."
"As I step into the newest season of my life, please know this game has meant the world to me. The lessons learned on and off the field will stay with me forever."
Smith finished the five-game stretch with the Eagles with 10 tackles, three quarterback hits, two tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. He was tied for second on the team in sacks despite playing one less game than everyone else.
Everyone should welcome in on congratulating Smith on a great career as he made three Pro Bowls in his career. He's always been a consistent performer off the edge and one of the most underappreciated defenders in the game over the last 10 years.
With that being said, this is a disaster waiting to happen for the Eagles. With Nolan Smith Jr. and Ogbo Okoronkwo on IR, this leaves the Eagles with just Josh Uche, Jalyx Hunt, Patrick Johnson, and Azeez Ojulari as the only active edge rushers on the Eagles.
This is a position group that has been hit with injuries and inconsistent play. They need a ton of help at the position, so don't be surprised if Eagles general manager Howie Roseman makes some calls to strike a deal in a trade.
It's a crushing blow to the Eagles that are already dealing with a two-game losing streak. Hopefully things will improve, but not looking great right now in Philly.
