I'm sorry, but I have to talk about Za'Darius Smith and the Detroit Lions again.
I know I've done that often this offseason, but signing Smith just seems to make too much sense for the Lions.
Now there's another good reason for them to take a look at reuniting with the former All-Pro edge rusher.
His nephew wants the chance to play alongside him in the NFL.
Smith's nephew, Jackson Meeks, is a wide receiver who went unselected in this year's NFL Draft, but he ended up finding a home with the Lions as a free agent.
Meeks recently spoke to MLive's Kory Woods and said that playing alongside his uncle would be a "dream come true".
“That’d be a dream come true, man. I’ve been asking him about that since I was 12 or 13,” Meeks told MLive. “Like I said, the younger kid in me -- when I got this opportunity with the Lions, man, I was so ecstatic. So, man, it would be such a blessing to be able to play with my uncle.”
Maybe Meeks can convince his uncle to give the Lions a discount because the only thing that could be holding up a move is money.
The Lions shouldn't think that what they have available right now is good enough outside of Aidan Hutchinson. Even if they do, they are at a point where "good enough" simply isn't good enough.
Real chances at Super Bowl runs don't come around often. The Lions should understand that better than anybody.
Even if they like what they have on the edge, they should be doing whatever they can to get better and give themselves the best possible chance at finally appearing in a Super Bowl.
That should mean signing Smith, giving him the chance to potentially play alongside his nephew (who still needs to make the roster himself), and allowing people like me to only have to talk about Smith one more time until the start of the regular season.
