Green Bay didn’t wait around for free agency to fix its linebacker problem. The Packers went out and got their guy. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Green Bay Packers have agreed to a trade with the Indianapolis Colts, acquiring Linebacker Zaire Franklin in exchange for 25-year-old Defensive Tackle Colby Wooden.
It is the kind of move that doesn’t make headlines the same way a blockbuster like the Maxx Crosby deal does, but for a Packers team staring down a linebacker vacancy, landing Franklin might be the most important move they make this offseason.
The newest addition to the Packers defense: Zaire Franklin, who led the NFL with 173 tackles and made the Pro Bowl in 2024.

Franklin is not some reclamation project or a depth signing with upside. The man led the entire NFL in tackles in 2024 with 173. He also posted a career-high 179 the season before that, which was second-best in the league. He’s been a tackle machine for four straight years, logging 100+ stops in each of those seasons without fail.
Franklin brings 88 games of starting experience to a Packers linebacker room that desperately needs a foundation. With Quay Walker set to hit free agency, Green Bay could have been in a real mess at the position heading into the 2026 season. Instead, Matt LaFleur’s defense now has a proven, battle-tested starter walking through the door before the first domino of free agency even falls.
Some players put up big tackle numbers because they’re in the right scheme at the right time. Franklin isn’t one of them. The former seventh-round pick out of Syracuse has earned every rep he’s gotten in Indianapolis. Undrafted talent gets cut. Seventh-round picks become practice squad fodder. Franklin spent eight years with the Colts and became one of the most productive linebackers in the entire league.
He earned second-team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl nod in 2024. That’s not a fluke. That’s a guy who figured out what it takes to thrive in the NFL and then did it, year after year, in a market that didn’t give him nearly enough credit for it. Now he gets a fresh start in Green Bay, a city that tends to treat its defensive contributors very well.
Indianapolis wasn’t giving Franklin away out of spite. The Colts were sitting roughly $4 million under the cap before this deal, which, in NFL terms, is essentially broke. By moving Franklin’s contract, they freed up approximately $5 million in cap space. That is enough to give them some breathing room heading into free agency.
In return, they get Wooden, a 25-year-old defensive tackle who adds depth to their interior defensive line. It’s not a sexy return for a two-time tackle leader, but the cap reality in Indianapolis made the move necessary. Sometimes a front office has to make the pragmatic call, even when the player involved deserves better.
Green Bay’s defense has talent. They have pass rushers, a secondary that can make plays, and a coaching staff that knows how to put players in positions to succeed. What they’ve been missing is a reliable, every-down linebacker who can anchor the middle and process things quickly.
Franklin does exactly that. He reads run plays fast, gets downhill in a hurry, and has enough athleticism to hold up in coverage when asked. He’s not a liability. He’s an asset, and at this stage of his career, coming off back-to-back monster seasons, he should be hitting his prime.
For a Packers team that went into this offseason with legitimate questions at linebacker, adding Franklin before free agency even opens is a genuine win. Green Bay’s front office saw a need, identified the right player, and made it happen without overpaying or giving up significant draft capital.
The Packers aren’t done building. There’s still work to do on the roster, and free agency will bring plenty of noise and speculation over the coming days. But securing Franklin early removes one of the biggest question marks on the defensive side of the ball. Don’t sleep on this trade. It might end up being one of the smartest moves of the entire offseason.
