2024 NHL Draft in Sphere in Vegas a Success
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

With the madness of free agency over, we here at Full Press Hockey can look back on a great event at the end of June, the 2024 NHL Draft. This year’s edition of the draft was at the Sphere in Las Vegas, and what a site it was.

Credit NHL Chief Operating Officer Steve Mayer for putting on a great show at the Sphere. The sights and sounds were incredible. It was the perfect place to hold the final centralized draft in the NHL. Hopefully, we will see a centralized draft again, but as of now, the 2025 NHL Draft will be decentralized. But back to the 2024 NHL Draft.

While it was hot outside in Vegas, the NHL showed why it is the coolest game on Earth. The League utilized every inch of the Sphere to give the fans the ultimate experience. The way they introduced the players, the graphics on the screen, and the graphics on the outside of the Sphere, you knew you were in the right place for this year’s edition of the NHL Draft.

The NHL also pulled out all the stops for the teams drafting in the first round. Celene Dion announced the Montreal Canadiens pick of Ivan Demidov at five, while Michael Buffer announced the Philadelphia Flyers pick of Jett Luchanko at 13. It was fantastic to see Buffer in Vegas as he is synonymous with Vegas and the boxing world, introducing significant fights.

All eyes are on the NHL Draft to see what happens. While Day One went off as usual, Day 2 saw significant trades. It started early and often on Day 2 of the NHL Draft. Right away, Mikhail Sergachev was traded to Utah from Tampa Bay.

Soon after, John Marino was sent from New Jersey to Utah. Then Vegas got in on the action, trading Logan Thompson to Washington and Paul Cotter to New Jersey. Not to mention, the Maple Leafs got their man in Chris Tanev.

For a few moments there, it felt like trades were coming in every minute on the minute. But that is what makes the NHL Draft so exciting. Plus, with NHL Free Agency only two days after the end of the draft, you knew some teams would take advantage of staying in Sin City.

The NHL again proved why it wanted to be first in Las Vegas. In 2017-18, the NHL saw the Vegas Golden Knights take the hockey and sports world by storm. Within five years of existence, the team won the Stanley Cup.

Soon after, the NFL followed, bringing the Raiders from Oakland to Las Vegas. Now, MLB is bringing the Oakland A’s to Sin City. Now, the NHL was first again, being the first of the four major sports leagues to hold their draft at the Sphere. You know, those Leagues will follow suit.

With the success of the NHL Awards and 2024 NHL Draft, there is no doubt in anyone’s mind they are going back to Vegas shortly. It is what is best for business.
