Well, the NHL insiders all said to buckle up this offseason, as this would be a super busy summer with tons of news that would dominate the headlines. And wow, were they ever right as a major bomb dropped yesterday as Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are now engaged! Obviously, this is what they were referring to.

Anyways, to celebrate the occasion, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to do what I do best and once again relate Taylor Swift to hockey. Somehow, the higher-ups at The Win Column let me do this (again), so I am going to take full advantage of this before they change their mind. Let’s begin (again), shall we?

Ryan Lomberg

“I’m the only one of me baby, that’s the fun of me.”

Song: ME!

Ryan Lomberg may not give you goals or assists, but he is definitely a loved member in the room. He brings a very unique voice to the room and has become a fan favourite in the city.

Connor Zary

“Nobody’s heard from me for months.”

Song: Call It What You Want

Connor, for the love of god, please sign your contract. I am begging you.

Mikael Backlund

“And when I felt like I was an old cardigan under someone’s bed, you put me on and said I was your favourite.”

Song: Cardigan

Mikael Backlund is 36 years old, and the prime years of his hockey have passed; however, he is still the captain of the Calgary Flames and is relied on to lead the team. Despite his age, he is a key member of the organization.

Daniil Miromanov & Jake Bean

“I forgot that you existed.”

Song: I Forgot That You Existed

I feel like the quote speaks for itself here. Simply put, there is no room for these players on this roster, and I’m sure a change of scenery would be appreciated for both parties.

Dustin Wolf

“My spine split from carrying us up that hill.”

Song: So Long London

The one—and probably only—reason why the Flames were even in the playoff discussion? Dustin Wolf. Without his incredible play and putting the team on his back, this team would not have had a chance.

Rasmus Andersson

“The story of us looks a lot like a tragedy now.”

Song: The Story of Us

Once a beloved member of the team, Rasmus Andersson seems to have fallen down the rankings with fans, with how this whole trade saga has gone. Declining multiple trades and now likely starting training camp as a player who is practically guaranteed to be gone by the trade deadline isn’t going to make fans feel great. Let’s hope it doesn’t become a distraction for the team.

MacKenzie Weegar

“I prefer hiding in plain sight.”

Song: Dear Reader

Somehow, MacKenzie Weegar might just be the most underrated player in the NHL. By far the best defenceman on the Flames, arguably a top 10 defenceman in the league, and definitely a top 20 defenceman in the league. Despite this, so many fans and media outlets seem not to notice his value.

Zayne Parekh

“When you are young they assume you know nothing.”

Song: Cardigan

Zayne Parekh is one of the most promising prospects in hockey, and he has true elite talent. Despite this, the constant ridicule of Parekh is his “lack of defence,” cocky attitude, and poor defensive decision-making. Personally, I think this has been blown way out of proportion. Simply put, he is a fantastic young hockey player. Flames fans should be excited about the potential this player has, as he is going to bring a lot of happiness to this city.

Jonathan Huberdeau

“Ask me what I’ve learned from all these years ask me what I’ve earned from all these tears ask me why so many fade, but I’m still here.”

Song: Karma

Entering his fourth year as a Flame, it would be an understatement to say that Jonathan Huberdeau’s time in Calgary hasn’t gone to plan. He struggled a lot the first two years, and we finally saw a bit of a bounce back last season. Although it was an improvement, it’s not nearly what is truly expected from him. Lessons have been learned over the years, and now it’s time for Huberdeau to show what he has learned. Hopefully, last season was The Last Time he has a down year.

Yegor Sharangovich

Long story short, it was a bad time, long story short, I survived.”

Song: Long Story Short

Simply put, Yegor Sharangovich had a bad season last year, and I Think He Knows. Whether it was a physical injury or something mental, he just didn’t seem like the player we saw in the 2023–24 season. Though the season may have been a bad time, he got through it, and it’s now on to the next one to try to rebound.

October is almost here

It’s been such a long summer, and I’m sure many of us are itching for things to get going. But after a long wait, and smelling the salty air this August, October is starting to creep into sight. It’s the best time of the year, and it’s time to prepare and get excited. That’s right, because on October 3, Taylor Swift’s new album comes out. Oh yeah, also four days after that, hockey is officially back.
