Quinn Hutson’s development so far

Season Team Goals Assists Points
2022–23 Boston University 15 13 28
2023–24 Boston University 18 18 36
2024–25 Boston University 23 27 50

Hutson has spent his last three seasons with Boston University in the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) where he has played a career total of 117 games and produced 56 goals, with 58 assists, for 114 points. That is almost a point per game and gives him an average of 0.97.

The right-winger led Boston University in scoring last season and finished second in terms of points per game, behind Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Issac Howard of Michigan State. Hutson also helped Boston reach the Frozen Four national championship game that ended in a loss to Western Michigan.

Something cool to note, is that Hutson is the older brother of the Montreal Canadiens defenceman Lane Hutson, and Washington Capitals prospect Cole Hutson, who both also played for Boston University.

Quinn Hutson’s strengths and weaknesses

Hutson is an above-average skater, who has good acceleration and agility. He possesses excellent puck handling skills that allow him to control the puck effectively in various situations. With his pro-level shot, he is known for his ability to score goals.

He also has a strong understanding of time and space on the ice, allowing him to find high-danger areas for his teammates and himself. Hutson plays a give-and-go style, which showcases his ability to anticipate plays and work well with his teammates, particularly when it comes to generating scoring chances. Lastly, he demonstrates responsible and effective defensive play.

While Hutson is considered an above-average skater with good mobility in motion, he struggles to build speed from a standstill. This can be a significant disadvantage when defending against faster forwards and trying to enter the offensive zone.

He also has trouble with pivots and maintaining speed while skating backwards. Hutson is a smaller player (5’11”, 170 lbs), who can be easily outmuscled by stronger opponents, in board battles and along the walls. Due to his skating and size, there are concerns about his ability to consistently defend against NHL-calibre players and prevent zone entries.

Quinn Hutson’s next steps

It is not going to take Hutson long to play in the NHL, as he will be playing for the Edmonton Oilers this season, after finishing his college career at Boston University. He has already made two appearances in games against the Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks on April, 14 and 16 respectively.

There is a real chance that Quinn Hutson will earn some bottom-six minutes for the Oilers this season. Being 23-years-old, Edmonton and their organization are not going to want to wait any longer for his development, which is why I think that he will be in the final lineup come preseason. With next season being the final year of his contract, Hutson will have to prove to the Oilers why he deserves to stay with the team and be re-signed.
