2026/27 Calgary Flames Player Preview: Matvei Gridin

Back in 2024, Gridin was a late first-round pick that many national outlets called a reach rather quickly, and given that he was in the USHL and not a large name, that didn't come as much surprise. However, 83 points in 60 games shouldn't be ignored, and after dominating the QMJHL with 79 points in 56 games played in 2024/25, he made a mark in training camp a year ago and won a roster spot out of camp.

While he would be sent to the AHL to get some game time, Gridin took advantage of that opportunity as well, tallying 10 goals and 30 points in 37 games played as he was named a Calgary Wranglers All-Star. Then, he returned to the NHL, immediatley making an impact once again, and when he found his ideal linemates in Matt Coronato and Morgan Frost, he began to thrive, posting 4 goals and 16 points in his final 26 games.

As a result, Gridin's final numbers look like this: 6 goals, 20 points in 37 games, and given how quickly he adjusted as a playmaker at the next level, this is going to simply be a sign of things to come for Calgary.

What Role Will Gridin Play in 2026/27?

On another team, Gridin could play a role in the middle-six and be a key piece of a second power play unit, but in Calgary, a team desperate for young talent, he's going to play among the most minutes of anyone on the team both on the top line and as a key facilitator for the top PP unit.

As a result, he's going to be given every opportunity to maximize his talent and offensive upside, and after he single-handedly took over games for the Wranglers, there's no reason to doubt him this season. Likely, Gridin will be playing on a line with Frost and Coronato once more, and while the future's coming late in the year and in 2027/28, Gridin now has the opportunity to solidify himself as a genuine star for the Flames in the years to come.
