2026/27 Calgary Flames Player Preview: Samuel Honzek

Back in 2024/25, Honzek showed potential before his first campaign was stopped due to injury, and when he returned, he posted a rather solid 8 goals and 21 points in 52 games played as a 20-year-old.

Last season, he was once again the talk of the town in Calgary during training camp, as he reportedly put on 15 pounds before dominating in off-season workouts, and that saw him once again win a role heading into the regular season. Through 18 games, Honzek played a role alongside the responsible Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman, and quickly, the former first-round pick showed how much he learned from both, and after a while, he started to show elite traits, tallying 2 goals and 4 points through 18 games.

Those numbers don't jump off the page, but Honzek's play spoke for itself, and at 21-years-old, he's now hoping for a fully healthy season, and if that happens, the Flames may see him start to take strides in 2026/27.

What Will Samuel Honzek's Role be in 2026/27?

Unfortunately for Honzek, he hasn't yet solidified his role to be a permanent member of either Flames special teams group, but at 5v5 a year ago, he grew in confidence and skill as time went on, and he hopes to continue that this year.

While he doesn't have prior production, this season should all be about the youth for the Flames, and in Honzek, the team have a ready built replacement for the likes of Blake Coleman or Mikael Backlund, as he can be a key piece to the Flames middle-six for a long, long time to come.

Ultimately, this season all depends on Honzek being healthy after playing in just 18 games a year ago, but if Honzek can finally put together a full season, we could see flashes of a full-time NHLer that this organization has needed for quite some time.
