2026 Calgary Flames Prospect Rankings: #5 Cullen Potter

Potter remains a valid prospect in the Flames system. Unfortunately, his 2025–26 season was cut short due to a season-ending injury. This injury limited him to just 24 games, during which he scored 12 goals and 26 points.

Potter’s development so far

Potter really began to stand out as a prospect when he joined Arizona State. College is considered a tougher route for hockey players, and for him to stand out at Arizona State is a testament to his skill. Potter was on pace to have an awesome season last year, but his serious injury really messed up his upward projection. Hopefully Potter can get a look at professional hockey within the next couple of seasons.

Potter’s Strengths

Skating

Easily, the best part of Potter’s game is his skating ability. His explosive starts can make it difficult for defenders and easy for his team to transition. The acceleration Potter shows in his skating makes him a threat on the attack while also providing him the chance to backcheck and make an impact in the defensive zone. His speed is key to every part of his game. He gets quick shots off, slips passes through defenders, and applies pressure on the forecheck. Through his limited action last season, Potter showcased this in the offence he produced. It is just a shame hockey fans did not get to see a full season of this.

Creativity

Another of Potter’s main strengths is his creativity. This is primarily shown in his playmaking abilities while he attacks off the rush. His skating plays a key role in this, as it allows him to make quick moves to manipulate defenders. Potter’s creativity is a very important skill, as it cannot really be taught. Through his time at Arizona State, Potter was one of the more dynamic players on the team. His creativity allowed him to drive the play and be a main factor on the power play and at even strength. It will be interesting to see how his 2026–27 season goes as he plays for Michigan State University.

Potter’s Weaknesses

Physicality

The main weakness for Potter is his physicality. He is not the type to go out and throw a bunch of hits, but his speed makes up for that. Potter is on the smaller side, as he stands at 5’10” and only weighs in at 172 lbs per Elite Prospects. This is not something to worry about with him, as he will grow and gain more muscle as he gets older. He is only 19 years old, so there is more than enough time for him to develop and get stronger. However, as he transitions into professional hockey, it would be a good idea for him to incorporate more physical play in his game. This will help him stand out more and have more of an impact away from the puck.

Consistency

Another weakness of Potter is finding overall consistency. This is probably one of the tougher aspects of being an athlete because everyone has a bad game. However, to be an impactful NHLer, Potter must find a way to be more consistent. Yes, he can put up points and showcase his speed, but his decision-making needs to be consistent across the board. Potter is one to showcase flashy skills, but sometimes they lead to turnovers and unnecessary passes. He will need to smarten that up, as it will lead to more goals against in professional hockey.

Potter’s next steps

The ideal next step for Potter would be having a dominant season at Michigan State University next year. This is hopefully a possibility, as he will be surrounded by better talent than at ASU. After two solid seasons with ASU, I expect Potter to have a significant breakout season in 2026–27. Another big step for the 19-year-old will be getting the opportunity to play for Team USA at the 2027 World Juniors. One could argue he deserved to be on the team last year, but there is no doubt that he will make the team as long as he is healthy.

It is most likely that Potter could see his first NHL action as soon as the 2028–29 NHL season.
