2026 Calgary Flames Prospect Rankings: #7 Ethan Wyttenbach

Wyttenbach continues to make the Flames’ scouting staff look even better. Scoring 59 points in 40 games in the NCAA is nothing short of impressive, especially for a player chosen in the latter half of the 2025 NHL Draft.

Wyttenbach’s development so far

Wyttenbach’s production really started to take shape once he joined the NCAA. College hockey can be a tough adjustment for many players, but Wyttenbach clearly thrives in the college environment. Given his current path, it wouldn’t be surprising if he gets a look in professional hockey sooner rather than later.

Wyttenbach’s Strengths

Goal scoring and shot

Wyttenbach’s most dangerous offensive tool is his ability to finish. He has a natural goal scorer’s mentality and gets his shot off quickly, allowing him to capitalize before defenders can close him down. His 24 goals in 44 USHL games were followed by 24 goals in just 38 NCAA games, demonstrating that his finishing ability has translated despite the significant jump in competition. He isn’t simply a volume shooter, either. Wyttenbach has a strong sense for when to attack shooting areas and when to move the puck, which prevents defenders from simply taking away his shot.

Creativity

The ability to make difficult offensive plays without appearing rushed is also a major strength for Wyttenbach. He can attack with speed, manipulate defenders with his positioning, find teammates through coverage, or take the shot himself. His combination of speed, skill, timing, and anticipation makes him a difficult player to predict in the offensive zone. That offensive versatility was a major reason his freshman season became so impressive, as he wasn’t simply producing because of one hot streak or one particular situation. He finished 10 points ahead of Quinnipiac’s second-leading scorer and ranked among the NCAA’s overall scoring leaders as a freshman.

Wyttenbach’s Weaknesses

Playing through contact

Wyttenbach’s smaller frame can make it difficult for him to maintain possession when he is forced into physical situations. He is willing to compete, but there is a difference between competing for a puck and consistently winning possession against larger defenders. Developing stronger puck-protection habits such as using his body more effectively, changing directions quickly, and getting pucks off his stick before contact arrives will be crucial. His best route to NHL success is likely avoiding unnecessary collisions rather than trying to win physical battles against much larger players.

Defensive impact

Offensive instincts for Wyttenbach are considerably more advanced than his defensive game. Wyttenbach can be effective when he anticipates plays and uses his speed to pressure opponents, but he still needs to become more consistent with his positioning away from the puck. For a smaller forward competing for an NHL job, defensive reliability will be particularly important. Coaches are more likely to trust him in the lineup if he can consistently pressure opposing puck carriers, support his defencemen, and make the correct reads in the defensive zone.

Wyttenbach’s next steps

Wyttenbach’s immediate next step is returning to Quinnipiac University for the 2026–27 NCAA season. After an outstanding freshman campaign, the Flames and Wyttenbach have elected to continue his development in college rather than rush him into professional hockey. He recorded 59 points in 40 games as a freshman, so the focus now is proving that production was sustainable while becoming a more complete player.
