Tomáš Chrenko is one of the most exciting potential second-round targets in the 2026 NHL Draft. The Slovak centerman is coming off a historic draft-year season, finishing as the 3rd most productive draft-eligible in Slovak Extraliga history, only behind NHL greats Marián Hossa and Marián Gáborík. Chrenko has proven his ability to rise in big moments, scoring the overtime championship-winning goal for HK Nitra in game seven of the Slovak league finals. Chrenko’s twelve playoff points place Chrenko second in draft-eligible playoff production, only behind 2022 2nd overall pick Šimon Nemec.
Chrenko has proved his ability to produce on North American ice, leading the Slovaks in scoring at last year’s U18 World Juniors in Texas and this year’s World Junior Championships in Minnesota. His stellar international play and historic Slovak league production suggest a reasonably high ceiling and floor for a player projected in his range.

Chrenko’s offensive game is built on hockey IQ and versatility. While he is not the flashiest individual talent, Chrenko molds his skills into a well-balanced offensive attack. As a playmaker, he has a strong ability to find teammates in the inner slot and other dangerous areas. Chrenko is also very effective as a supporting player, often acting as the connective piece during o-zone cycles. With the puck on his stick, he loves to attack the middle of the ice using his strong agility and quick hands. Perhaps the most important aspect of Chrenko’s offensive game is his position. He constantly puts himself in a position to drive play, whether he’s finding a soft spot to receive a pass or taking space to open up passing lanes to teammates Chrenko dictates the game with his positioning. This is most evident on the power play, where Chrenko is a true offensive dynamo. His skating and agility allow him to keep a safe distance from defenders, which pairs well with his dangerous arsenal of releases. While he is particularly effective on the left flank with his one-timer and wrist shot, his accurate toe-drag release still forces defenders to respect him as a shooter on the right side.
Another key part of Chrenko’s game is his efficiency in transition. Despite being one of the youngest players in the Slovak Extraliga, he is often relied upon heavily for breakouts and zone entries. Like with his offensive game, this is due to his strong position. Leaving his own zone, Chrenko finds open ice to create a passing option for the defenders. Once in the neutral zone, his agile skating and ability to protect the puck from defenders make him an effective puck carrier. Both as a distributor and a pass target, Chrenko routinely takes advantage of gaps in opposing coverage, helping his team enter the opposing zone.
Tomáš Chrenko’s blend of in-zone offence and strong transition play makes him a potential steal in the late first to early second round. As an undersized centerman at 5’11” who struggles in the faceoff dot, only winning 47% of his draws this season, there are some reasonable concerns that Chrenko will transition to the wing at the NHL level. While he can get pushed off pucks quite easily, Chrenko’s edgework and mobility allow him to escape pressure. With his skills on the perimeter and room to get stronger, Chrenko has some real NHL potential as a middle-of-the-lineup creator.
With Chrenko’s toolkit as a strong connecting player, he would likely be best suited on a line with other talented players. If he can join a team that already has a deep young core or prospect pool, he could be a really effective depth piece. Teams with late first-rounders or early seconds that fit this description would be the San Jose Sharks, Montreal Canadiens, and Calgary Flames. The latter two boast Chrenko’s star countryman Juraj Slafkovsky and Šimon Nemec, and would be the best fits for Chrenko.
