The Dallas Stars terminated coach Peter DeBoer after his controversial actions in the postseason, and there are now 2 clubs that could emerge as potential new fits for him if he wants to continue his coaching career.
There will be a new head coach next season for the Dallas Stars, who decided to terminate Peter DeBoer after a 3rd straight loss in the WCF and a 2nd straight to the Edmonton Oilers.
DeBoer's fate was essentially sealed after his controversial pulling of goaltender Jake Oettinger in their Game 5 loss to the Oilers, followed by his comments afterward; there were also reports that he didn't speak personally with Oettinger either.
DeBoer has shown no indication that he plans to retire from coaching, and there still teams who could be looking to make a switch behind the bench themselves.
Adam Proteau of The Hockey News has suggested 3 different teams who could potentially consider hiring DeBoer, though they all currently have head coaches - the Buffalo Sabres, Los Angeles Kings, and Nashville Predators.
The Kings would be a potential fit for DeBoer in the wake of Jim Hiller's controversial goaltending challenge in their own postseason loss to the Oilers that had the effect of changing the series around. They also boast several exciting young players that DeBoer could work with to get them over the hump of the 1st round doldrums.
The Sabres, who still have veteran coach Lindy Ruff behind the bench, are desperately hoping to end their NHL-worst 14-year postseason drought. DeBoer could be a viable candidate if the 65-year-old Ruff decides to retire or if the Sabres get off to a poor start next season.
As far as the Predators are concerned, Andrew Brunette could be on a short leash if they stumble out to another poor start as they did this year.
