The New York Rangers are in an interesting position heading toward the 2025 Trade Deadline. They are fighting to find their way back into the playoffs after a sluggish start and while they’ve made some moves to try and sneak into the postseason, they may end up just missing. While they are expected to be buyers at the deadline, there is a possibility they would consider moving some players if the trade offer is worth their time. One player who could get moved is veteran Jonathan Quick, who could be nearing the end of his successful career and may want one more crack at a Stanley Cup. In this article, we will take a look at three potential trade destinations for him.
Quick, who is 39 years old, has played 19 games this season and won eight games posting a 3.09 goals-against-average (GAA) and a .897 save percentage adding two shutouts. He has played 799 games in his career winning 401 adding 62 shutouts and posting a 2.49 GAA with a .911 SV%.
The first team that makes sense for Quick is the Edmonton Oilers. There have been mixed reports surrounding their team as to whether or not they’re interested in acquiring a goaltender or if they’re going to trust their current tandem of Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard, but Quick is someone who has won a championship previously and has experience winning games in the playoffs. He is a reasonably priced goaltender who could do well alongside Skinner as they try to get back to a Stanley Cup Final.
Quick has a $1.275 million cap hit and is a pending unrestricted free agent. The Oilers could easily bring him in without having to move too much out, especially if they choose to utilize the cap relief brought from forward Evander Kane being on long-term injured reserve. They make a ton of sense as a potential fit, but time will tell if they choose to pursue an upgrade between the pipes before the deadline.
Another team that has been linked to acquiring goaltending depth is the Carolina Hurricanes, who do have decent depth between the pipes but could benefit from a stronger veteran presence heading into the postseason. Their goaltending has been one of their biggest issues and has been criticized as a reason why they haven’t been able to make a Stanley Cup run in the past several seasons. Quick is very affordable, and they have the assets to make a deal work if they choose to make an offer to the Rangers.
Injury issues have riddled the Hurricanes between the pipes in recent seasons, and it could be a reason they look to bring in a goaltender at the trade deadline. They have proven themselves to be willing to spend to bring in players, as we saw when they acquired Mikko Rantanen, and I would expect them to be even more active as the deadline approaches.
The Calgary Flames could be a team that looks to upgrade their goaltending tandem and give Dustin Wolf a veteran to back him up as they push to make it back to the postseason. Dan Vladar isn’t the strongest backup goaltender by any means and the team could upgrade if they pursued Quick. If they end up sneaking into a playoff spot in the Western Conference, a tandem of Wolf and Quick could be extremely tough to beat in a seven-game series.
All three of these teams have the assets to make a deal work, but a deal will only get made if the Rangers choose to part ways with Quick. Even as a veteran, he has been able to prove why he could be a valuable addition between the pipes for a contending team, and if the Rangers are still outside of the playoff picture at the trade deadline, he could be someone they consider moving for the right price to give him a chance to push for one last Stanley Cup.
