The Seattle Kraken hosted the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday, March 27. Despite a slow first period, the Kraken pulled out all the stops in the second, scoring five goals to catapult them into the lead. The Kraken took the victory in this game 6-1.
In the second period, the Kraken set a new franchise record.
Ten minutes into the second period, the Kraken won the faceoff. The puck made its way to Adam Larsson at the blue line. He took a shot, and Jani Nyman tipped the puck into the net to score the third goal of the night. In just eight games with Seattle, Nyman is already finding his stride. He has recorded six points from three goals and three assists.
Just 16 seconds later, Kaapo Kakko took a shot on the net, which was blocked by Calvin Pickard. Kakko retrieved the rebound. He spotted Matty Beniers in front of the net to his left and passed him the puck. While Pickard was still blocking Kakko, Beniers took the shot and buried it in the back of the net.
Not only were these two goals scored, but Jordan Eberle netted a goal less than a minute after this. However, it was challenged by Edmonton for offside and called back. If this goal had not been called back, the Kraken would have set a new franchise record for the shortest time in which three goals were scored, 49 seconds. The current record is 1:03, set by Andre Burakovksy, Eeli Tolvanen, and Jared McCann on Jan. 14, 2023.
Regardless, the Kraken set a new franchise record. With the help of Nyman and Beniers’ two goals in 16 seconds in the second period and three more goals later on, they now have a new franchise record for the most goals scored at home within a single period.
Joey Daccord had his best game of the season against the Oilers. He recorded a save percentage (SV%) of .973. Of the 37 shots the Oilers took on the net, he stopped 36 of them. Only allowing one goal in the third period, Daccord was close to a shutout victory, but Zach Hyman had other plans.
After Daccord’s last two games resulted in losses, this was a stellar performance for him. His last two starts were against the Oilers and Calgary Flames. In both games, he let in four goals, including Nazem Kadri’s overtime winner in Calgary. Of the 50 games he has played this season, this is now his 24th victory.
The Kraken are one of the newest franchises in the NHL, and they have struggled against some teams in their last four seasons. As they try to get into the win column and increase their record against certain teams, they have finally won again against the Oilers.
Since joining the NHL, the Kraken have played the Oilers 15 times. Since the Oilers are in the same division as Seattle, they typically play against one another four times a season. In Seattle’s first season as a team, they only played against the Oilers three times.
The Kraken recently took on the Oilers less than a week before this game on Saturday, March 22. The Oilers took the victory 5-4, despite a close matchup. That game marked the Kraken’s ninth straight loss to Edmonton. That streak was finally broken in this game. Seattle’s last victory against the Oilers was recorded on Jan. 1, 2023, when the Kraken won by a score of 5-2.
Perhaps some of this victory can be attributed to the absence of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, even though Seattle couldn’t take advantage of their absence last Saturday. Here’s hoping they can stay in the win column against the Oilers, or at least not lose consecutively again.
The Kraken will play their next game on Sunday, March 30 when they host the Dallas Stars.
