On Tuesday, Oct. 27, the New Jersey Devils began their three-game West Coast road trip. Heading into this game against the Dallas Stars, the Devils were looking to extend their win streak that they started back at the Prudential Center.
The Devils scored just two minutes into the game, taking an early lead. 38 seconds into the second period, Devils were up by two goals, with a third goal 11 minutes in. Five minutes after, the Stars got on the board with their first of the game. 28 seconds later, the Devils were leading by three goals once more. With a final third period goal for the Devils, they secured a 5-1 win over the Stars.
The Devils scored five goals on the Stars, and 12 different players put their names on the score sheet. It was Nico Hischier who scored first, with assists from Luke Evangelista and Johnathan Kovacevic. Hischier scored the Devils’ second goal as well, this time with Timo Meier and Luke Hughes getting the apples.
Despite losing a tooth in the first period, Jack Hughes came back out onto the ice with the full face mask on and recorded the primary assist on Jesper Boqvist’s goal; Arseny Gritsyuk recorded the secondary. Dougie Hamilton and Anthony Mantha recorded the assists on L. Hughes’s goal, while Brett Pesce and Jesper Bratt each had an assist on J. Hughes.
This game was a full team effort, and each player pulled their weight. In the end, it allowed the Devils the success to take home the win.
In his second season in the NHL, Gritsyuk has been incredible. In his last six games, Gritsyuk has recorded eight points. This is the first game of the six in which he didn’t score a goal, but his assist allows his point streak to grow longer.
Already for the season, Gritsyuk has 10 points in 12 games. He was already off to a good offensive start, but this success only grew when he was elevated to the top line with J. Hughes and Bratt. Head coach Sheldon Keefe should keep this line together, as the trio have been a great part of the Devils’ offense to begin the 2026-27 season.
To kick off the Devils back-to-back, the team announced Connor Hellebuyck would get his first start with New Jersey. The Devils just acquired him on Friday in a blockbuster trade with the Winnipeg Jets. While Hellebuyck hasn’t played any games with the Jets this season, he was training back home in Michigan while he awaited his future. Despite the team saying they would wait to condition him, just four days after joining the Devils, he was already in the crease.
In his first game with New Jersey, Hellebuyck helped lead them to victory. He stopped 17 of the Stars’ 18 shots, only allowing one goal. Hellebuyck was truly the Devils’ last line of defense, as the rest of the team did a good job of controlling the puck and making the most of offensive chances. Even with the Devils performing at their best, Hellebuyck did a fantastic job to keep New Jersey in the game.
Of the 12 games the Devils have played to start the season, eight of them have been at home. The Devils’ last three game homestand resulted in three straight wins for New Jersey. Now, kicking off the three game road trip, the Devils extended their win streak to four games.
Not only did the Devils increase their win streak, this game was their regulation win on the road. Their first road game resulted in a 6-0 shutout loss to the New York Islanders. In their next game on the road, the Devils beat the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesar’s Arena, but the game went into overtime to decide the winner. On Oct. 17, the Devils fell 4-2 to the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena.
Now that the Devils have their first regulation road win of the season, they’ll look to continue this success on the rest of the trip.
The Devils are back in action on Oct. 28, when they take on the Colorado Avalanche at Ball Arena. This concludes the season series between these two teams, as the Devils just beat Colorado 4-3; they’ll look to close out the series with a sweep. Puck drop is scheduled for 9 PM ET.
