A Flame From the Past: David Moss
Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

Do you remember David Moss?

Every once in a while, we take a look at a player who once played for the Calgary Flames in a series called “A Flame From the Past”. This player has to have played a significant number of games for the Flames. I’ll put every Flames’ season into a Wheel of Names, and this time, it landed on the 2008-09 season, the second time we’ve looked at a player from the 2008-09 season. In this article, we’ll take a look at David Moss.

Moss played high school hockey in Detroit, and eventually played a season with the United States Hockey League’s Cedar Rapids Roughriders, where he scored 20 goals and 38 points in 2000-01. The Flames drafted the 6’4” winger 220th in the 2001 draft.

Before turning professional, Moss played four seasons with the University of Michigan Wolverines. In his freshman season, he scored four goals and 13 points in 43 games. His sophomore season was his career-best year, scoring 14 goals and 31 points in 43 games. Moss’ scoring decreased in 2003-04, potting just eight goals and 20 points in 38 games, but he managed to score 10 goals and 30 points in 38 games in 2004-05, his senior year.

After four seasons in college, Moss spent an entire season with the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights, where he scored 21 goals and 48 points in 63 games, making him a legitimate prospect in the Flames’ organization. The Livonia, Michigan native played 28 American Hockey League games in 2006-07, but made his National Hockey League debut that same season, scoring 10 goals and 18 points in 41 games.

Moss participated in the 2007 post-season with the Flames, picking up an assist in six games. The following season, Moss scored four goals and 11 points in 41 games, with a goal and two points in five playoff games. His 2008-09 season was his career-best year, scoring 20 goals and 39 points in 81 games, along with three goals in six playoff games, the final post-season he’d participate in.

The 2009-10 season saw Moss’ scoring decrease to just eight goals and 17 points in 64 games, but the 2010-11 season was his most productive season, scoring 17 goals and 30 points in just 58 games. Moss’ final season with the Flames was in 2011-12, scoring two goals and nine points in 32 games.

Moss’ Flames tenure was hampered by injuries, but he was a productive player when healthy, scoring 61 goals and 124 points in 317 games. In the 2012 off-season, Moss signed a two-year deal with the then Phoenix Coyotes, scoring five goals and 20 points in 45 games during the lockout season of 2012-13.

The 2013-14 season was a solid one for Moss, as he scored eight goals and 22 points in 79 games. His final NHL season came with the Arizona Coyotes in 2014-15, scoring four goals and 12 points in 60 games. Moss’ final season in professional hockey came with Biel HC in Switzerland during the 2015-16 season, where the winger scored six goals and 16 points in 19 games before calling it a career.

Overall, Moss finished with 78 goals and 178 points in 501 games. For a seventh-round pick, this was in no means a poor career.
