After belated signing, Brennan Othmann cracks Flames’ opening roster

It took a while for the Calgary Flames and Brennan Othmann to agree to terms on a new contract for the 2026-27 season, but now that the dust has settled, the 23-year-old winger has earned a spot on the team’s opening roster out of training camp.

Othmann was not placed on waivers on Sunday, which means he’s guaranteed to remain with the Flames when they submit their season-opening roster to the NHL’s head office prior to Monday’s 3 p.m. deadline.

The Flames currently have 25 players remaining on their 2026 training camp roster, but that includes injured forward Jonathan Huberdeau and waiver-exempt winger Aydar Suniev. The only way for the Flames to pare their roster down to 23 players before Monday’s deadline is to place Huberdeau on injured reserve and demote one of their waiver-exempt players, of which they have four: Sam Honzek, Zayne Parekh, Matvei Gridin, and Suniev.

In a pair of appearances with the Flames in the 2026 preseason, Othmann recorded a pair of assists, three shots on goal, and 32 penalty minutes across 13:07 of ice time. Flames Now host Pat Steinberg confirmed the news of Othmann’s inclusion on Calgary’s opening roster on Sunday.

The Flames acquired Othmann from the New York Rangers ahead of the 2026 trade deadline in exchange for prospect Jacob Battaglia. Othmann subsequently appeared in his first two games with the Flames late in the 2025-26 season, recording a goal and an assist; he finished the year with nine goals and 25 points in 40 AHL games split between the Hartford Wolf Pack and Calgary Wranglers, as well as three points in 19 NHL games with the Rangers and Flames.

Othmann’s three-year, entry-level contract officially came to an end on July 1, 2026, making him a restricted free agent without arbitration rights. Despite his apparent lack of leverage, however, Othmann remained unsigned until Sept. 18 (the second day of training camp), at which time he finally agreed to terms on a two-way deal with the Flames for the 2026-27 season. According to PuckPedia, Othmann will earn a $975,000 salary in the NHL and a $220,000 salary in the AHL, with a guaranteed minimum take-home of $250,000.

The Rangers originally selected Othmann in the first round (No. 16 overall) of the 2021 NHL Draft. The 6’0″ left wing scored 50 goals with the OHL’s Flint Firebirds in 2021-22 and played for Team Canada at back-to-back World Junior Championships, winning gold in both 2022 and 2023. He’s amassed 42 goals and 92 points in 134 career AHL games with Hartford and Calgary, adding five points in 10 Calder Cup Playoff contests.

Barring an unexpected change from his current digits, Othmann will wear No. 78 with the Flames in the 2026-27 regular season. He is the last piece the organization still has to show for the Chris Tanev trade, in which the Flames received defenseman Artem Grushnikov and a 2024 second-round pick (used to select Battaglia).
