AHL cancels season due to coronavirus pandemic

Things are not looking good for hockey, or any sport for that matter amid the coronavirus pandemic. The American Hockey League, which houses prospects for the NHL, has canceled the remainder of its season due to COVID-19, according to a statement released by the league.

"The AHL’s standings – sorted by points percentage – and statistics as of March 12, 2020, are considered final and official, and will serve as the basis for determining league awards for the 2019-20 season," the league said in the statement.

In terms of determining awards, it looks like the Milwaukee Admirals will win the Norman R. "Bud" Poile Trophy as the Western Conference regular-season champions and the Sam Pollock Trophy as the Central Division champions.

Similarly, the Providence Bruins will win the Frank Mathers Trophy as the Eastern Conference Champions and the Emile Francis Trophy as the Atlantic Divison champions. The Belleville Senators will win the F.G. "Teddy" Oke Trophy as the North Division champions and the Tucson Roadrunners will win the John D. Chick Trophy as the Pacific Division champions.

When looking at individual awards, it looks like the Iowa Wild's Sam Anas will win the John B. Sollenberger Trophy as the league's top point scorer and Gerry Mayhew will win the Willie Marshall Award as the top goal scorer.

It seems that the Senators' Josh Norris and Alex Formenton will be up for the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award as the rookie of the year as well as Bruins center Jack Studnicka.

It'll definitely be interesting to see how certain awards are handed out, but it's ultimately an unfortunate end to the AHL season.
