Rankings

He was one half of the London Knights’ goaltending duo that earned the Dave Pinkney Trophy, awarded to the goaltenders of the team with the least amount of goals against during the OHL regular season, alongside Austin Elliott this season. However, Aleksei Medvedev was somewhat overshadowed by the incredible season Elliott had for the team.

Still, Medvedev came in as an OHL rookie and played 34 games for the Knights with a 2.79 goals against average (GAA), a .912 save percentage (SV%) and a 22-8-2 record. In early December, he earned both the OHL’s Goaltender of the Week and the OHL’s Rookie of the Week honours having recorded his first OHL shutout, winning both of his games that week in the process.

Medvedev was a second-round pick for the Knights in the 2023 OHL Priority Selection and has fit right in with one of the league’s more storied franchises. While he had some shaky moments early on in the season, the Russian-born goaltender found his groove and helped the Knights clinched the division, the conference and the OHL regular season championship.

He also claimed the Rookie of the Month in November, going 6-0 with a 1.98 GAA for the Knights. Even with the shaky moments in the early parts of the season, Medvedev found his footing and demonstrated why he should be considered amongst the top goalies in this draft.

He plays with composure and makes big saves in key moments of games. While he’s still somewhat light and could grow some more in his draft plus-one season, Medvedev’s ability to move from post-to-post and read the play in front of him allows him to make saves that might be above average for rookie goaltenders in the CHL. He’s strong positionally and he understands where he needs to be to give himself the opportunity to make each and every save.

While it’s not a focus for many goaltenders coming up now with that trapezoid behind the net, Medvedev might be one of the better stick-handling net minders we’ve seen in a while. This is all not to say that he won’t have a bad game from time to time, but the key to goaltending is composure and consistency and Medvedev has both – always giving his team an opportunity to win the game.

Aleksei Medvedev – NHL Draft Projection

Most have him projected as a late second-round pick in the range of 57 to 64. While our rankers have him as a third-round pick, his recent play and the fact that he just finished up his rookie season in the OHL could bode well for the young goaltender. As of now, the worst case is that he falls to the third round, but this could be a player we look back on wondering why he was passed over in the second round.

Quotables

“It won’t surprise me if Medvedev ends up being selected ahead of Ivankovic, and possibly challenges Ravensbergen for the top goalie slot in this draft class. He has great size, fronts shooters very well, and almost never ends up outside his posts when moving laterally. In my opinion, Medvedev’s crease composure, overall, is the best in the draft class. He allows the puck to come to him and manages how to make saves and track rebounds on time.” – Jason Bukala, Sportsnet

“Medvedev makes every single save the same way. From the first shot tot he last, far out or in tight, he approaches every save with poise and very deliberate movements. He’s not overwhelmingly quick, but he’s not overwhelmingly sharp. He fits well into that technician style, clearly aware of the tools he has and how to make strong saves with them. He doesn’t try too hard, or push out too far – and is able to maintain his mental very well because of it. When it comes to cool, calm, and collected – Medvedev is the guy this year. He’s been a stunning addition to a strong London lineup. So long as he stays tempered, I can’t wait to see how he handles the pros.” – Gabriel Foley, Recruit Scouting

NHL Potential

Goaltenders can be a little tougher to read in terms of their long-term development. Early on, it seems as though Medvedev could be a goalie to watch for in the future. If he can add some size and muscle to his frame, he has the potential to be an NHLer down the road, the ‘when’ is more of a question mark. That said, if he continues to develop in the right way with the Knights and beyond that, Medvedev could become a mainstay in the NHL in the next five or six seasons.

Awards/Achievements

On top of his week of being OHL Rookie of the Week early in the season, Medvedev was also named the OHL’s Rookie of the Month in November 2024 and OHL Goaltender of the Month in January 2025. As mentioned, he was also one half of the Dave Pinkney Trophy this season alongside Elliott for the lowest team goals-against with the Knights. To add to that, Medvedev took home the 2024-25 FW ‘Dirty’ Moore Trophy for the lowest rookie goals-against average in the OHL.
