The Oilers are getting some reinforcement in the crease and on the back end as the team announced on Sunday they have called up Jack Campbell and Philip Broberg.

It comes after the Bakersfield Condors were swept in the first round by the Ontario Reign, ending Campbell and Broberg’s AHL season.

Campbell is unlikely to get into games, barring any injuries, but the fact that he is back up with the big club is a thought few could have envisioned back in November when he was first sent down to rebuild his game. He certainly had his moments down in the AHL where he was starting to turn a corner and went on some heaters. Still, it was not enough to earn him a promotion during the regular season as the strong play of the Oilers and him getting hurt contributed to his elongated stint down south.

While the circumstances surrounding his return aren’t ones he had in mind when this first transpired, it has to be a huge confidence boost that Campbell has found his way back to the NHL after all he went through this season.

As for Broberg, he is back in the mix to provide some additional insurance on the back end and could slide into the fold if needed. He was already called up a few weeks ago towards the end of the regular season where he played in the final two games before returning to the AHL. Broberg has a bright future with the organization even with the tumultuous period where he requested a trade, but it is probably not going to suit up for games unless the Oilers get desperate or suddenly become shorthanded on the backend.

Campbell only appeared in five NHL games before getting placed on waivers, going 1-4-0 with a .873 save percentage and a 4.5o goals against average. Broberg appeared in 12 contests this season where he racked up two assists in that span.
