Barry Trotz is not happy with Tyson Barrie.
The new Nashville Predators general manager unloaded on the veteran defenseman on the Nashville radio station 102.5 The Game on Tuesday night, criticizing how Barrie responded to being made a healthy scratch for Saturday’s game against the New York Rangers.
“Tyson’s game hasn’t translated as well as we had liked with us this year,” Trotz told radio host Jared Stillman. “He’s having a tough time not being on the first power play [unit] … so, the other night, he was healthy scratched for the first time in his career.
“Different players react to it differently,” Trotz continued. “I didn’t like the way he reacted to it.”
Barrie, 32, joined the Predators from the Edmonton Oilers ahead of the 2023 trade deadline in a deal that saw Mattias Ekholm head the other way. The Predators also received forward prospect Reid Schaefer and two draft picks in the trade.
Through 22 games with the Predators this season, Barrie has managed just nine points. He amassed 13 goals and 55 points in 82 games split between Edmonton and Nashville in the 2022–23 regular season.
As the news of Barrie being made a healthy scratch came out on Saturday, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman also reported that Barrie’s camp had been granted permission by the Predators to seek a trade. Barrie is set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Trotz didn’t refute Friedman’s report, but he was certainly unhappy that it became public knowledge.
“We were very disappointed it got out, because there’s only about four people in the world that knew about it,” Trotz said. “I was very disappointed in that. It didn’t come from the Preds, I do know that 100 percent.
“Obviously, someone felt that it should be out there and they put it out there,” Trotz continued. “We will get on the phones and say ‘Tyson’s not happy in his situation right now, are there any takers?’ There might be, might not. And I’m sure him and his agent will be doing the same thing.”
Barrie also did not play in Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres, which the Predators won 2–1. It’s unclear whether he’ll draw into the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Either way, it seems as though Barrie isn’t long for the Predators organization, with Trotz saying he was “very disappointed in how Tyson handled” being scratched.
“I want you to come here to win,” Trotz said. “I don’t want you to come here to retire.”
Through 790 career NHL games with the Predators, Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Colorado Avalanche, Barrie has collected 108 goals and 499 points. He’s added two goals and 20 points in 46 playoff contests.

Since arriving in the NHL however, the 6-foot-1 centre has tallied just 11 goals and 28 points in 139 games played, and after putting up just 5 points in 18 games a season ago, many wondered if he indeed had a future in the National Hockey League. Now, that question has officially been answered, as the 25-year old has signed a deal overseas with HC Dynamite Pardubice of the Czech Extraliga, suggesting that he'll be heading home in 2025/26. While he was never a prolific scorer, Lauko was always seen as a very dynamic bottom-six player at the NHL level, but unfortunately he just hasn't been able to develop and consistently produce at the next level, and it's clear that he has disappointed in the league so far. At 25-years of age, there's plenty of time for Lauko to turn things around and find his way back to the NHL at some stage, but with the opportunity to play on the biggest stage back in his home country in a league that continues to grow in quality and popularity, he may want to spend the rest of his career there, but for now, he's got a great opportunity to do either one.

Marlins troll Yankees with fitting song amid series sweep
The Miami Marlins turned to good ol’ Neil Diamond to clown on the New York Yankees during their impressive weekend triumph. Miami pulled off an improbable three-game series sweep of the Yankees on Sunday with a 7-3 win at LoanDepot Park in Miami. It marked the sixth consecutive series victory for the Marlins as well as their first-ever three-game sweep of the Yankees in franchise history. As Sunday’s game was nearing the end, the Marlins decided to have some fun. With the Yankees down to their last three outs entering the top of the ninth inning, “Sweet Caroline” began loudly playing inside the ballpark. Here is a video: Of course, “Sweet Caroline” is an anthem of the Boston Red Sox, the hated rivals of the Yankees. The song plays in the eighth inning of every game at Fenway Park. Fittingly enough, the 62-51 Red Sox are officially now ahead of the Yankees in the AL East standings (thanks to the Yankees’ brutal weekend against the Marlins putting them at 60-52). The Yankees only had themselves to blame for their poor weekend showing, piling on several more embarrassing mental mistakes during the series. As for the Marlins though, they are quickly looking like one of the best stories of the second half. After sitting at a dismal 25-41 in mid-June, Miami is suddenly a .500 team again at 55-55 and it has clawed to within 5.5 games back of a wild-card spot in the NL.
Fever coach says Caitlin Clark’s injury is a ‘blessing in disguise’
Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White had some rather bold comments about Caitlin Clark’s lingering injury on Sunday. Clark missed her seventh consecutive game Sunday with a groin injury, but Indiana still won by beating the Seattle Storm 78-74. After losing their first two games without Clark, the Fever have now won five in a row. White thinks that is not a coincidence. She suggested that Clark’s absence has forced other players to step up and grow more confident. “I said it early when C was out the first time: while we don’t like it, sometimes it can be a blessing in disguise, because everybody else finds themselves, and no one is afraid to make the big play,” White said. It remains unclear when Clark will return to action, but the Fever have clearly learned how to succeed without her. In theory, that should make them even more formidable once she does return. The Fever certainly do not think they are better off without Clark. Her teammates remain adamantly behind her even as she sits out. The big question now is how good the team can be once she’s back.
