Anaheim Ducks Claim Ross Johnston Off Waivers From Islanders

After getting placed on waivers yesterday by the New York Islanders, Ross Johnston has found a new home.

First reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Johnston was claimed by the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday.

Johnston joined the Islanders as an undrafted free agent in 2015, but his role became increasingly marginalized as time progressed.

Last season, Johnston appeared in just 16 games for the Islanders and has averaged 22 games per season in his last four full NHL seasons.

Entering training camp this year, it seemed Johnston was with the Islanders on borrowed time as their salary cap situation made it nearly impossible to keep him under contract at $1.1 million this season.

Now in Anaheim, Johnston will get an opportunity to stick in the NHL, playing for a Ducks team that is in the process of rebuilding.

The Ducks will visit the Islanders at UBS Arena on Dec. 13 in what could potentially be Johnston’s return to Long Island.
