Anaheim Ducks claim William Lagesson off waivers from Toronto Maple Leafs
John E. Sokolowski-USA TODAY Sports

The Anaheim Ducks have claimed defenseman William Lagesson off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Daily Faceoff‘s Frank Seravalli reported Friday afternoon.

Lagesson, 28, has four points (all assists) while averaging 14:31 of ice time in 30 games with the Maple Leafs this season. He’s under contract through the end of the year at a $775,000 cap hit.

The Maple Leafs needed to clear room on their blue line after adding defensemen Ilya Lyubushkin and Joel Edmundson ahead of the trade deadline. Lagesson ended up being the odd man out.

The Ducks currently sit in seventh place in the Pacific Division and 30th in the NHL with a 23-36-3 record and 49 points in 62 games this season. They’re set to take on the Dallas Stars on Friday at 7:00 p.m. PT.

Lagesson joins a Ducks defensive group that also includes Cam Fowler, Radko Gudas, Pavel Mintyukov, Jackson LaCombe, Olen Zellweger, Urho Vaakanainen, and Gustav Lindstrom.

The Edmonton Oilers originally selected Lagesson in the fourth round (No. 91 overall) of the 2014 NHL Draft. The 6’2″ lefty from Göthenburg, Sweden made his NHL debut with the Oilers in the 2019–20 season.

After spending parts of three seasons with the Oilers, Lagesson joined the Montreal Canadiens midway through 2021–22 after being involved in the trade that sent Brett Kulak to Edmonton. After appearing in three games with the Canadiens to finish that season, Lagesson spent all of 2022–23 with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves.

Through 90 career games over parts of four NHL seasons with the Oilers, Canadiens, and Maple Leafs, Lagesson has collected 11 assists (but has yet to score his first NHL goal).
