The Los Angeles Kings have some huge decisions to make this summer, and now, they've been urged to part ways with a very expensive top defenseman.
After a promising regular season, the Los Angeles Kings disappointed in the Stanley Cup Playoffs once again, and after moving on from GM Rob Blake, likely to be replaced by Ken Holland, the changes could be coming in waves this off-season.
According to reports, the team are set to be aggressive in negotiations with pending free agents, and that has brought up conversations around Vladislav Gavrikov, who put together the best of his three seasons in LA in 2024/25.
Now, the 29-year old wants to cash in, with Frank Seravalli recently projecting that he could get a deal in free agency for six or seven years with an impressive $7.6 million salary cap hit.
These negotiations will come on the back of a 5 goal, 30 point season over 82 games for the Russian star, and with a +26 differential, it's easy to see why he's in a position to demand a huge contract from the Kings, especially as they look to change GM's who will want to make a mark on their new team.
However, there have been calls for the team to not rise to this price, with Rink Royalty recently noting that his age should be a hinderance to a long-term deal, urging the team to not pay that price.
There is no question that Gavrikov had a good season and took on a bigger role with Drew Doughty out for the first half of the season. However, he will be turning 30 next season and at this average salary, it raises concerns if he can still be as productive at the end of this contract.
Ultimately, Gavrikov was fantastic for this team in 2024/25, but it's unclear if he can play at that level again, and with many teams out there looking to pay top names, don't be surprised to see him end up a highly sought after free agent who departs the team.
