When talk of the Toronto Maple Leafs trading a goaltender has come up this year, it’s often revolved around Anthony Stolarz, largely because he’s been out of sight and out of mind due to injury, and also given that Joseph Woll and Dennis Hildeby are considerably younger.
While that all remains very true, it hasn’t stopped one analyst from believing that the Maple Leafs should be willing to trade any of the three for the right offer — including Woll, who most see as the closest thing to untouchable of the trio.
Bryan Hayes of TSN’s OverDrive shared his thoughts on the dilemma when asked whether he sees any scenario where Woll is the goalie that gets moved out of Toronto when all is said and done.
“No, I would put him on the table, possibly too. I mean, it would depend on what the best package is you’re getting back. Because I think Woll is just a good goalie, and that’s what he’s going to be. A good goalie that starts maybe 40 games, and is going to have some ups and downs — and that’s what he is. He’s a good goalie in the league. But I don’t see superstardom in his future.”
The 27-year-old Woll has had a strong season despite the team’s ups and downs, going 13-7-4 with a 2.92 goals-against average, a .910 save percentage, and two shutouts across 24 starts. He’s in year one of the three-year, $11 million extension he signed with the Maple Leafs in 2024.
While Woll — like Stolarz — has dealt with plenty of injury issues throughout his career, there’s no doubt that when available, he’s the Maple Leafs’ best goaltender and still has much of his prime ahead of him.
As a result, GM Brad Treliving would need to be blown away or receive a true impact player in return if he were to trade him — or at least that’s how he should view it.
On the flip side, because of his age, upside, and ability, Woll would certainly draw the best return of the three goaltenders, which in turn could intrigue Treliving to consider moving him to potentially strengthen another area of the roster while allowing Stolarz and Hildeby to form a tandem.
That being said, the latter would be a risky move, as neither Stolarz nor Hildeby has started 35 games in an NHL season before because of health issues and just overall inexperience. For a team with hopes of retooling to get right back on the horse and be competitive in 2026–27, having Woll as one of their goaltenders feels necessary.
