Analyzing Potential Red Wings and Canucks Trades
Bob Frid-Imagn Images

Detroit and Vancouver both need a boost right now. Detroit could use an infusion of talent to their lineup, and Vancouver could use a new look to get out of their funk. Being in opposite conferences and being open for business, they feel like potential trade partners. Let’s take a look at some of the names that could interest both teams.

Detroit Could Want:

  • Connor Garland, RW
  • Kiefer Sherwood, RW (unlikely to move)
  • Marcus Pettersson, LD

Vancouver Could Want:

  • J.T. Compher, C
  • Marco Kasper, C (unlikely to move)
  • Andrew Copp, C
  • Elmer Soderblom, LW
  • Amadeus Lombardi, C

Why?

Well, Detroit’s biggest need right now is some depth scoring, and Garland and Sherwood offer that in spades. Sherwood has 12 tucks this season, and Garland plays a really gritty style and has 13 points in 18 games. Both of them are undersized, but they both play with some real grit, especially Sherwood, who has 98 hits. Marcus Pettersson is pretty much the perfect partner for Moritz Seider, and adding Pettersson would give Detroit a fantastic defensive core, allowing Johansson to move back to the left side, giving Detroit an elite group of Pettersson-Seider, Chiarot-Sandin-Pellikka, Edvinsson-Johansson.

Vancouver could use some centre help, signing Kampf from Toronto immediately. It’s no surprise they’d want the young Kasper while he’s at his lowest right now. But beyond that, I think they would have some interest in the veterans Copp and Compher to give them some decent minutes. I think they would have some interest in Lombardi too. They could use some flair in Vancouver, and a high-producing prospect like Lombardi, who hasn’t had a shot in Detroit, might be a really interesting look for them.

Mock Trades:

Detroit Receives: Marcus Pettersson

Vancouver Receives: Amadeus Lombardi, Jacob Bernard-Docker, 2028 2nd round pick

In this one, Detroit lands Pettersson for all the reasons I said before. Vancouver gets an NHL-ready Lombardi, who they can use to help give them a young forward. Their depth in the AHL isn’t great. Lombardi wouldn’t be their best forward prospect, but would be their most NHL-ready. They receive Bernard-Docker because their right side doesn’t have any youth coming u,p and Bernard-Docker is still on the younger side and playing well in Detroit. The second-round pick is also of decent value. It’s far from what they gave up to get Pettersson, but it’s a solid return nonetheless

Detroit Receives: Connor Garland, 2026 4th round pick

Vancouver Receives: Andrew Copp (25% retained), Carter Mazur, 2028 3rd round pick

Here, Detroit gets Garland while giving up its solid defensive and depth-producing centre in Andrew Copp. They also give up the gritty Carter Mazur in return as a solid grinder to pair with just about anyone in that bottom six, giving them a solid prospect. Garland should help Detroit out. Ideally, he would be able to play alongside Nate Danielson or Marco Kasper on the third line, giving them some much-needed depth scoring.
