Mason Nevers is returning to the Idaho Steelheads for his rookie season after a strong college career with the Minnesota Golden Gophers and a solid first impression in the ECHL last spring.
On Thursday, the Steelheads announced they have re-signed forward Mason Nevers to an ECHL contract for the 2025-26 campaign. idahosteelheads.com
The 24-year-old will officially begin his rookie season after a short but promising stint in Boise last spring.
Nevers joined Idaho late in the 2024-25 season, scoring in his professional debut on April 4 in a 7-3 win over Allen. He finished the year with three points in six games, flashing the same leadership and poise that made him a captain at every level of his hockey career.
Before turning pro, Nevers spent five seasons at the University of Minnesota, where he served as team captain and tallied 66 points (27G, 39A) across 171 NCAA games.
He played a key role in Minnesota's Big Ten Championship run in 2021, plus back-to-back regular season titles in 2022 and 2023.
The Golden Gophers also made the NCAA Tournament every year during his time there, including two Frozen Four appearances and a crushing overtime loss in the 2023 national final against Quinnipiac.
Standing at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, the Edina, MN native is known more for his two-way game and leadership than flashy stats.
But his consistent production and high hockey IQ have made him a favorite wherever he's played.
Nevers also wore a letter with the USHL's Des Moines Buccaneers, where he posted 40 points in 47 games during the 2019-20 season, and captained Edina High School to a Minnesota State Championship in 2019.
The Steelheads, ECHL affiliate of the Dallas Stars, clearly see Nevers as more than just a depth forward.
Head Coach Everett Sheen didn't comment publicly on the deal, but the message is clear: the team is investing in a player they trust to grow and contribute right away.
I think this is exactly the kind of signing that makes a difference over the course of a long season.
With training camp around the corner, the Steelheads are set to open their 27th season on October 17 against Tahoe, followed by their home opener on October 24 versus the Utah Grizzlies.
