It has been a year since Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chair Tom Galvin announced the formation of a committee to bring back the Arizona Coyotes. At the time, Galvin stated, “Losing the NHL Coyotes was a low point, and I cringed when local politicians took glee in the demise of our hockey team. I have had several meetings with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, and he looks forward to working with us to identify an owner and the best location for a world-class building.”

Galvin kept his promise, and by September, he was happy to announce that Andrea Doan (Shane Doan’s wife) would chair the committee. “Andrea Doan is a longstanding supporter of Arizona hockey and is married to Shane Doan, who was instrumental in building Arizona’s hockey legacy,” Galvin said. “She is as much a part of the Arizona hockey story over the last 20-plus years as Shane. Andrea has dedicated much of her personal life to our community and building support for Arizona hockey. Andrea’s knowledge of the industry and her connections to Arizona and the NHL are instrumental to our mission.”

Advisory Panel On Pro Hockey In Arizona

“When Tom approached me about doing this, I was trying to decide whether I wanted to welcome this back into my life, but I’m a hockey guy through and through,” said Burke, who still maintains ties to many former Coyotes staff and players, including Shane Doan. “I watch hockey most nights of the week on the television when I have free time.

“I recognize that a strong part of our family legacy and my personal legacy is this sport, so if I can play any role in helping advise the powers that be in the community to do the right things to set this market up to ultimately get a team when the league decides to expand, that’s definitely worth picking my head back up and becoming a little more public than I generally choose to be.”

Taylor Burke is the son of Richard Burke, who played a pivotal role in bringing the Coyotes to Arizona from Winnipeg. Taylor was the club’s assistant general manager from 1995 to 2001. The Burke family owns the Ice Den Scottsdale and Ice Den Chandler. The Burkes are deeply involved in the Valley’s hockey community at the grassroots level. When Tom Galvin called to ask Taylor if he would join the panel, it didn’t take much convincing.

The Remaining Committee Members Are Quite Impressive

Sandra Watson is the President & CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority. Watson is a native Canadian and a hockey fan whose primary job is to attract business to the state. Watson reports to Governor Katie Hobbs.

Danny Seiden is the President & CEO of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Seiden was Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Doug Ducey. Seiden played a key role in the recent bill to renovate Chase Field.

Jordan Rose, is the Founder & President of Rose Law Group, and a leading Valley attorney on professional sports and sports law.

Jerry Bien-Willner, is the former Paradise Valley Mayor whose résumé has a diverse legal background.

John Giles, is the former Mesa Mayor, who built a relationship with current NHLPA Executive Director Marty Walsh when Walsh was the Mayor of Boston, and both were part of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Trey Terry, a Goodyear City Councilmember and longtime Coyotes fan.

The goal of the panel includes: to identify a suitable ownership group and to identify a suitable arena site. The panel has met numerous times, including a couple of weeks ago, a meeting that one source called “very fruitful.”

Ownership And Adding An Arena Are Vital

Acquiring a suitable owner has been the downfall of the Arizona Coyotes’ past. That was clearly apparent with the clown show ownership headed by one Alex Meruelo. It seems he was only looking out for himself and his ambitions to begin a gambling side business by owning the hockey team. Calling his reign as owner a complete failure is an understatement.

Meruelo may have had excellent success running his other businesses (banking, real estate, media, restaurants, food, and casinos). On March 27, 2023, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced that Meruelo would become the sole owner of the Arizona Coyotes. This occurred after Andrew Barroway was indefinitely banned from the league after being arrested for the alleged strangulation of his wife. Meruelo had no clue how to run a hockey team.

All in all, Meruelo got paid handsomely for $1 billion by selling the team to the NHL. In turn, Ryan Smith then purchased the team from the NHL and relocated it to Salt Lake City, Utah. Smith is an example of a qualified owner who gets things done.

Finding an adequate arena site has also been a debacle for Arizona. The Coyotes were literally evicted from Gila River Arena. Arizona was then forced to play in the Arizona State University Mullett Arena (4,600 seats) with hopes of building their own arena in Tempe, Arizona. Meruelo had falsely thought that a public vote to approve a new arena would pass, when it failed. The 110-acre arena site was to be auctioned off, but Meruelo showed his ineptitude by failing to acquire a Special Use Permit required by the state.

Competition For An Expansion Team Is Heavy

Cities like Houston, Atlanta, and even Quebec have been mentioned as NHL expansion sites. Does the Phoenix market stand a chance? Goodyear City Council member Trey Terry summed it up best.

“People on the outside look at it and say, ‘Well, why are you going to give them another chance? It already failed there,’” he said. “Arizona as a hockey market did not fail. Arizona’s an incredible hockey market, and I have seen that firsthand. If an ownership group is identified that fits the criteria the NHL is looking for, and they identify a rink location, a financing plan, and the politicians show that they’re willing to do what’s necessary to support the process, this market will stand up very well.

“But whatever we do with this committee, I don’t think we should focus on speed. We should focus on putting together a package that’s attractive to the league to come back, and if that takes a little longer, then so be it. I think it needs to come back the right way and be in the right hands, and be in the right location. If that’s the case, I’m 100 percent confident that it’ll do very well.”

End Of My Arizona Coyotes Return Rant

Taking away this writer’s team was sad. It still is. While the hopes of this committee reviving the franchise are a start, there is still a long road ahead. If politics don’t stand in the way, there could be NHL hockey back in Arizona within, say… five years. The NHL is doing well as a business, and adding more teams is just a matter of time.

Yet Coyotes’ fans are accustomed to disappointment. They await an owner who is committed to reinstating a major sport back to the Valley and state. It won’t be easy, but there are lots of loyal hockey fans remaining in the area looking forward to attending and following their revived Arizona team.

Sure, it’s fine watching former Coyotes players like Clayton Keller, Dylan Guenther, and Logan Cooley play in Utah. We, though, want our own team again!
