The NHL’s trade deadline is less than a week away, and trade rumors are flying off the charts. There’s plenty of buzz throughout the league, and we’ve seen some activity throughout the past seven days, which will pick up leading up to the 3 pm deadline on Friday.

There’s lots to cover, so here’s the very latest buzz from around the NHL:

Oilers calling Kane’s approve teams to test trade market

The Edmonton Oilers are open to moving Evander Kane. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported over the weekend that GM Stan Bowman has begun calling teams from Kane’s approved trade list to see what kind of market is out there for the veteran winger.

Kane no longer has a full no-movement clause and can decline being traded to 16 teams. The 33-year-0ld has yet to play a game this season as he recovers from multiple surgeries; meanwhile, he has one season left on his contract at $5.1 million AAV.

This may not be the first time the Oilers have attempted to trade Kane. Friedman reported last June there was some chatter during the NHL draft that the Oilers had asked Kane to waive his no-movement clause. The Oilers have struggled of late, and any move involving Kane could see some blueline help coming back the other way.

Rangers in talks to move Reilly Smith

The New York Rangers sat forward Reilly Smith on Sunday for trade-related reasons, as GM Chris Drury continues to re-tool on the fly. Smith, 33, is a pending unrestricted free agent owed $3.75 million this season. He can reject trades to eight teams with his modified no-trade coverage.

Smith is a Stanley Cup winner with loads of playoff experience and could be an under-the-radar-type addition for a contending team that could pay off in a major way. So far, in 58 games this year, he has scored 10 goals and 29 points. He has 106 games of playoff experience under his belt, with a very respectable 79 points to show for it.

Drury was very busy over the weekend as he pulled off a multi-player deal with the Colorado Avalanche, sending defenceman Ryan Lindgren and forward Jimmy Vesey to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Calvin de Haan, Juuso Parssinen, a 2025 conditional second-round pick and a 2025 conditional fourth-rounder.

Flyers Laughton trolls ongoing trade rumors

Philadelphia Flyers centre Scott Laughton is no stranger to trade rumors, and while out for a team meal over the weekend, he decided to have some fun with it, trolling the chatter with a ‘Last Supper’ type of photo:

“We were joking around. I think you kinda got to keep it light at this time of year,” he said  Saturday. “Joking around that it was my last time (with the Flyers) on the road. (Teammate Erik Johnson) was kind of poking fun at me, so we re-created a little picture.

“I think when you’re in (trade) rumors for five years straight, it’s nice to get some people back with a little bit of trolling.”

Laughton has been linked to the Maple Leafs for a few weeks now as an option for their third-line centre. There’s been lots of chatter about the Flyers wanting Fraser Minten included in the trade, meanwhile, Laughton has one season left on his contract, carrying a $3 million AAV.

Trade Market Quick Hits

  • Florida Panthers acquired defenceman Seth Jones from the Chicago Blackhawks for goaltender Spencer Knight and a conditional first-round pick. The Blackhawks retained $2.5 million AAV of Jones’ remaining five years, and with the Panthers moving Matthew Tkachuk to LTIR, they have over $8 million in cap space still to work with.
  • Minnesota Wild acquired forward Gustav Nyquist from the Nashville Predators for a second-round pick. Meanwhile, the Predators don’t appear to be done selling and could move the likes of Luke Schenn, Michael McCarron and Ryan O’Reilly.
  • Expect the Columbus Blue Jackets to add before Friday’s deadline, as GM Don Waddell admitted he owes it to the players to give them a chance to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
  • Vancouver Canucks could be moving Brock Boeser ahead of the deadline, as Boeser recently stated he’s frustrated with the lack of contract extension talks with management. The Los Angeles Kings are a potential destination as they are looking for top-six help on the wing.
  • TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports teams are calling the Montreal Canadiens about centre Jake Evans, but GM Kent Hughes is ok keeping Evans unless a team is willing to ante up to their asking price, which likely includes a first-round pick.
  • Pending unrestricted free agent San Jose Sharks forward Nico Sturm thinks it’s very likely he gets traded before the deadline: “I anticipate that something’s going to happen in those two weeks that we’re on the road, realistically. But it’s not really something that I’m worried about.”
  • Buffalo Sabres’ forward Alex Tuch is generating some buzz as a likely trade candidate, as Saturday’s Sabres/Canadiens game had 12 scouts in attendance, including the Tampa Bay Lightning, who have been linked to acquiring Tuch before Friday’s deadline.
  • The Sabres also have J.J. Peterka as a prime trade candidate. Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli added Peterka to his trade targets board, as teams have been calling Buffalo a lot lately.
