The Athletic has published details of a settlement reached with an employee of the New York Rangers after an alleged incident involving star player Artemi Panarin.
It has been a season of turmoil for the New York Rangers, and newly released details of a settlement reached with an employee of the team has added another layer to the disorder.
The Rangers have been eliminated from the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs after winning the President's Trophy last year, and there are likely several changes coming during the offseason, including the likely firing of head coach Peter Laviolette.
Now, The Athletic's Kaite Strang has released details of a settlement reached with a Rangers' employee in connection with an alleged incident involving star player Artemi Panarin.
Strang's article states the employee left the organization after receiving the settlement in August of 2024, which included non-disclosure and no admission of wrongdoing clauses.
'The alleged assault occurred in December 2023 during a Rangers road trip, according to two Rangers sources briefed about the allegation. Panarin and the woman, who was a regular part of the team's travelling party, were at a post-game gathering at a hotel with about a dozen other players and staff members. Panarin allegedly took her phone and said he would only give it back if she retrieved it from his hotel room, the sources said. When she went to his hotel room to retrieve her device, Panarin pinned her down on the bed. She pushed him off, retrieved her phone and left the room.'
Panarin and his agent refused to answer questions from Strang regarding the alleged incident. The New York Rangers and the NHL both insist the matter has been resolved.
In 2021, Panarin took a leave of absence from the Rangers after a report out of Russia accused him of an incident involving a woman at a bar in Latvia while he was playing in the KHL in 2011.
At the time, the Rangers said the allegations were an intimidation tactic due to a social media post in which Panarin was critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
