Arizona State University placed men’s hockey head coach Greg Powers on paid administrative leave Wednesday, September 30, days after seven current players asked the university to remove members of the coaching staff while an independent investigation takes place.
As of Tuesday, their request for an independent investigation had not been granted.

Assistant coach Mike Corbett will lead the Sun Devils this weekend as they open the season. ASU also said an interim head coach will be named soon.
Athletics Director Graham Rossini said the university continued collecting information before making the decision.
“Our focus continues to be on Matthew and his family, and on our student-athletes to make sure they have the support they need during this time and as the season begins.” — Graham Rossini, Arizona State Athletics Director
Rossini added that after “thorough and careful deliberation,” he believed the move would provide stability for the hockey program.
The decision followed a September 28 report submitted on behalf of seven current ASU hockey players. The players disputed portions of the university’s initial review of the August 20 workout that left Matthew Mayich hospitalized. They also asked ASU to place staff involved in approving, conducting and supervising the workout on administrative leave while an independent investigation took place. Currently, Powers was the only member of the coaching staff ASU had placed on administrative leave, while other staff members who were present during the August 20 workout have remained in their positions.
With the Sun Devils set to open their season this weekend, the program will move forward under different leadership and without their teammate Matthew Mayich beside them. Powers’ administrative leave marked a significant change for the players who spoke out just days earlier. For now, their focus can shift back to the ice, even as broader questions surrounding August 20 remain unresolved.
