Avalanche Re-Sign Goaltender Scott Wedgewood to Extension

The Colorado Avalanche took care of some business on Thursday, signing goaltender Scott Wedgewood to a contract extension. The deal is a one-year pact, worth $2.5 million.

Frank Seravalli writes, “The Wedgewall leads the league in wins – and should be in the conversation for third goalie for Team Canada.” He was the first goaltender to reach 10 wins this season.

The only real surprise here might be that the deal is only for one season. Many believe Wedgewood could have gotten a second year if he’d pushed for it and definitely would have in free agency.

Wedgewood has thrived as Colorado’s unexpected starter, posting a 10-1-2 record, .913 save percentage and 2.26 GAA while ranking top-15 in goals saved above expected. Despite Blackwood’s return, Wedgewood’s breakout play has earned him more starts and helped fuel the Avalanche’s league-best 11-1-5 run.
