Avalanche’s Toews, Landeskog out week-to-week with injuries

Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar shared updates on the injury status of two of the team’s most crucial players on Tuesday.

Bednar told a group of reporters, including Corey Masisak of The Denver Post, that defenseman Devon Toews is out on a week-to-week basis while captain Gabriel Landeskog will miss a period of weeks as well.

Landeskog, who returned to action this season for the first time since 2022, suffered an upper-body injury when he crashed into the net during Sunday’s game against the Florida Panthers. The Swedish Olympian has 7 goals and 15 assists for 22 points in 41 games played.

Bednar added that it’s too early to rule out Landeskog’s participation in the Olympics at this time.

Toews suffered a lower-body injury last week against the Carolina Hurricanes. The 31-year-old has 13 points in 40 games played, and he’s posted a plus-26 rating while paired with Cale Makar for an excellent Avalanche squad. That chemistry with Makar, along with his own strong play, propelled Toews to another opportunity to represent Canada in best-on-best international competition, as he was named to the Olympic team after performing well during the 4 Nations Face-Off last year.

Colorado suffered just its third regulation loss of the season against the Panthers, dropping their record for the season to 31-3-7. The Avs have an 11-point cushion over the Dallas Stars for first place in both the Central Division and the NHL as a whole, and they remain on pace to beat the 2022-23 Boston Bruins’ record of 135 points in a season.

The Avalanche are set to wrap up a road trip to the East on Tuesday night with a visit to Tampa Bay. Colorado will then wrap up their slate for the week by hosting a pair of Eastern Conference foes when they welcome the Senators and Blue Jackets to Ball Arena on Thursday and Saturday.
