Best-Available Free Agent Turned Down Oilers Offer Before Switching Agents

Former Carolina Hurricanes forward Jack Roslovic remains one of the most notable unsigned free agents with less than a month before the new NHL season begins, and a new report has the Edmonton Oilers as an unlikely destination.

That's because Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reported Thursday that Roslovic turned down an offer from the Oilers earlier this offseason.

According to LeBrun, the 28-year-old forward rejected the Oilers prior to switching agents, moving from Claude Lemieux to Justin Duberman, as he continues his search for a contract.

“I do believe there was an offer from the Edmonton Oilers at some point, but Roslovic, 28, turned it down,” LeBrun wrote. “He has since switched agents. He’s now with Justin Duberman.”

Roslovic, who scored 22 goals and recorded 39 points in 81 games for the Hurricanes last season, is reportedly looking for term on his next deal.

After signing a one-year, $2.8 million contract with Carolina in 2024, LeBrun reported that Roslovic is hoping to secure more than a one-year agreement this time around, which might be the reason for the delay in finding a new home throughout the summer.

“Word is he’d like to get term on his next deal — more than one year,” LeBrun wrote. “That may not be easy to do this late into things, with teams mostly filled out.”

Despite producing one of his strongest offensive campaigns of his career last year, Roslovic has yet to find a team as he approaches 30 years old.

Roslovic's remaining in free agency is worrying for him, as most clubs have finalized their rosters for training camp while cap space is scarce among title contenders, limiting the forward's options in the market.

Roslovic has played for four NHL teams since breaking in with the Winnipeg Jets in 2016. He spent three seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets, had a short stint with the New York Rangers in 2024, and moved to Carolina for 2024-25.
