The Calgary Flames brought forth a significantly better look in the offensive zone but still fell short against the Winnipeg Jets, losing 5-3.

It’s a Team Game – It was a different game for the Flames than we had been seeing previously. Forced to go hunting for offence after falling behind by multiple goals the area the Flames needed a spark in found some ignition. Zayne Parekh gets on PP1 and finds himself with a secondary assist on the Nazem Kadri goal. Mikael Backlund found a lane in the middle of the ice and took the puck right to the house. It was their best goal output since the season opener – unfortunately Wolf can’t be a brick wall every single game and this is one he couldn’t hold the fort down for. The offence and his amazing performances haven’t happened on the same night for eight games – all losses – so it’s coming time when both will occur, and Calgary will take a win. If they keep up what they did tonight, as well as their prior two games, they’ll find their way back to wins. The shooting percentage slump can only happen for so long. I’m not saying they’ll magically go on a run and make the playoffs, but they aren’t going to lose 81 games in a row either.
Corsi King – Is it any surprise to find Joel Farabee (80.38 CF%) at the top of this list anymore? Consistently just takes pucks out of his own zone and helps keep things in the attacking zone. If anyone’s going to benefit from some better bounces soon it has got too be Farabee. He deserves to have two to three goals on the season with the amount of chances he’s been in on. Joel Hanley (76.24 per cent) was highly noticeable in an offensive sense for Calgary. He hit the crossbar and was able to keep a lot of plays alive. He played with Zayne Parekh (59.85 per cent) until there was around 10 minutes to play in the game. Then Huska left Jake Bean (48.20 per cent) on the bench and sent MacKenzie Weegar (44.04 per cent) out with Parekh as the team tried to score some more goals. It is nice to see the young defenceman having enough trust with the coach to be out there in that role.
Under Pressure –
Taken By Chance – Samuel Honzek (74.74 SCF% // 87.24 HDCF%) is also in the same boat as Farabee. He’s played really responsible defensive hockey all over the ice, been great on the forecheck and also has been aiding in the team’s ability to get high danger looks. He should have more production than his current output – he’s had a quite productive stint and is showcasing he can be a player here going forward. If only the goals would start to materialize – he’s getting the looks! Morgan Frost (44.85 per cent // 40.30 per cent) was in the doghouse this game. Limited ice time after all that great play to start the season. There was a lot of penalties getting in the way of things as well, but it was still Frost as the one getting the message in this one. Yegor Sharangovich (76.86 per cent // 100 per cent) was the first guy, and after Frost is done it will be somebody else’s turn.
xG Breakdown –
xGF% – Adam Klapka (98.09 per cent) does something to get noticed every night. He’s been more physical and is certainly dropping the gloves more than he used to. He does have good speed to go with his size and can push play into the attacking zone – I like him as a 4RW quite a bit. I’m ready for another Matthew Coronato (35.30 per cent) goal. He scored those two great goals a week ago and hasn’t come too close since. He’s got to find ways to utilize that shot more often – it’s going to beat the goaltender. Tonight, he had a season high 4 shots – perfect, let’s have more of that. Jonathan Huberdeau (62.61 per cent) makes this team significantly better, but with all of his linemates going cold on the shooting front there’s not a lot of points being produced. I’ve liked the way Huberdeau has been playing – spending more time attacking than defending by a decent margin – which is something Calgary really needs.

Shot Heatmap –
In The Crease – Dustin Wolf was beat at 5v5 just once in this game. The rest of it he was subjected to a collection of penalty kills where the outward personnel failed to defend quality shots. The Jets found a lot of space in and around the crease. A common theme in the goals against have been the defender not being physical enough to box their man out or tie up their stick. Wolf can only do so much and when you are down a skater you just do your best. I will never question Wolf’s work ethic, he’s more than showcased he’s always giving it his all. 1.60 expected goals at 5v5 with just one of those getting behind him.
