One day before the NHL regular season begins, TNT Sports announced big news about analyst Wayne Gretzky, the NHL's best player ever.
TNT announced on Monday that Gretzky will remain part of its broadcast team for years to come. The network revealed that it has agreed to a multiyear contract renewal with “The Great One,” extending his role as a studio analyst on NHL on TNT.
“TNT Sports has agreed to a multiyear contract renewal with @WayneGretzky,” the TNT Sports U.S. PR account wrote on X. “Catch him on @NHL_On_TNT opening night this Wednesday, Oct. 8, with coverage starting at 6 p.m. ET.”
Gretzky previously extended his contract with Warner Bros. Discovery Sports, TNT's parent company, back in 2023.

Gretzky, 64, first joined TNT’s NHL coverage in 2021, shortly after the network secured its rights package with the league. As the best NHL player ever, Gretzky's arrival brought an instant boost in credibility and visibility to Turner’s broadcasts.
Since he arrived in TNT as an analyst, Gretzky has appeared in broadcasts along with a panel that includes former NHL players Paul Bissonnette, Anson Carter and Rick Tocchet.
Gretzky's renewal comes as TNT enters the midpoint of its multiyear media rights deal with the NHL, ensuring that Gretzky’s analysis remains a fixture on its coverage of key events such as the NHL's Winter Classic and the Stanley Cup Playoffs, potentially through the 2027-28 season.
Although he lost his historic goal-scoring record last season, Gretzky remains the NHL’s all-time leader in points with 2,857 and assists with 1,963.
Gretzky's post-playing career has included work as a coach, executive and ambassador, but broadcasting has become his primary link to the sport.
This news reaffirms TNT’s commitment to maintaining a recognizable, authoritative presence on its NHL coverage, led by none other than the player considered the icon of the league and the best player in history.
The 2025-26 NHL season will start on Tuesday with three games on ESPN before NHL on TNT takes over with a doubleheader on Wednesday with Gretzky leading the coverage.
