The Chicago Blackhawks made a surprising roster move Friday by recalling goalie Drew Commesso from the AHL's Rockford IceHogs. In a corresponding move, the Blackhawks assigned defenseman Isaak Phillips to Rockford.

After Drew Commesso's promotion, the Blackhawks have three goalies on the roster. Why do so? Arvid Soderblom is reportedly dealing with an illness. Additionally, Chicago has a slate of back-to-back games spanning Friday and Saturday.

Petr Mrazek is scheduled to start Friday against the Nashville Predators. Head coach Luke Richardson said Thursday that Arvid Soderblom would likely start Saturday against the Dallas Stars, a plan that may now be in jeopardy due to his illness.
Depending on Soderblom's status, Commesso could be in line to make his first NHL start Saturday. Regardless, the Blackhawks need a viable backup for Friday's tilt against Nashville, hence Commesso joining the roster.
The Blackhawks wrap up a four-game homestand Friday when they host the Predators at the United Center. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. CT and the game will stream on ESPN+/Hulu.
