The Chicago Blackhawks have placed forward Joey Anderson on waivers for the purpose of assigning him to the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Saturday.

Anderson, 27, missed the start of the 2025-26 season while recovering from a lower-body injury sustained during training camp. He took part in practice with the Blackhawks on Saturday and is evidently now healthy enough to start playing in Rockford, as long as he clears waivers.

The Roseville, Minnesota product is entering his fourth season in the Blackhawks organization and is under contract through the end of 2025-26 at an $800,000 NHL cap hit.

The New Jersey Devils originally selected Anderson in the third round (No. 73 overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft. The 6′, 207-pound right wing spent his first two post-draft seasons at the University of Minnesota-Duluth before turning pro in the Devils organization in 2018.

Anderson collected eight goals and 13 points in 52 games over two partial seasons with the Devils before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 2020 off-season in a one-for-one deal for Andreas Johnsson. Neither player enjoyed much success in their new surroundings, with Anderson appearing in just 20 NHL games over his three seasons in the Maple Leafs organization.

With the Maple Leafs in need of an upgrade on defense as they approached the 2023 trade deadline, they included Anderson in a deal with the Blackhawks that saw Jake McCabe head north to Toronto. Anderson spent the majority of the 2023-24 season in the NHL, collecting 17 points in 55 games, but managed just one single assist in 18 NHL games the following year.

Through 169 career games over parts of seven NHL seasons with the Devils, Maple Leafs, and Blackhawks, Anderson has collected 19 goals and 21 assists for 40 points.
